Embry Smerker has lived in her Heights home for the past three years, and has added layers of design details, crafting a classic cottage style. “I replaced and painted the shutters,” she says. “I also took out a corner flowerbed and put in sod.”
To accentuate the architectural details of the front of the home, Smerker painted around the doorway. “I painted black around the front door to show off its great architectural structure, and I also added railings,” she says.
On the porch, visitors find a welcoming seating area, where Smerker enjoys relaxing and catching up with neighbors. “People walk a lot in this neighborhood, and it’s given me a chance to get to know my neighbors.”
For an extra special touch, David Zoellner painted the doorknocker, which Smerker purchased in Greece, and he repurposed a side table Smerker already owned by painting it a bronze hue. “I spend a lot of time on my porch,” Smerker says. “The wicker chairs are rather comfortable, and my interior designer, Eva Riley, really helped me pull it all together.”
