Susan and Herren Hickingbotham’s Little Rock home is a testament to what a creative collaboration is all about. With help from interior designer Tom Chandler of Chandler & Associates, Susan and Herren have created a warm and welcoming house, perfect for entertaining guests as well as spending time with family.

Herren built the home years ago, and when the time came for an update, he and Susan contacted Tom. “We have always admired Tom’s talent,” Herren says. “And we heard from others what a wonderful designer he is to work with. When we first met him, we showed him specific photographs from a variety of design magazines, and he clearly understood our vision. He very much welcomed our input and encouraged us to be involved in the selection process.”

On a trip to Dallas with Tom, the Hickingbothams found several pieces of furniture, antique mirrors and unique accessories. “It’s such a pleasure to work with the Hickingbothams because they have great taste,” he says. “We spent a lot of time traveling together, and they didn’t rush any of their decisions. We just kept looking until we found the perfect pieces.” Working closely together, Susan, Herren and Tom were able to create a home that blends a variety of styles from classic to traditional to modern.

The same care and attention that the Hickingbothams put into their home, they also donate to many charity organizations around the area. It’s no surprise that this year Herren will be honored with the Jerry Davis Memorial award from the American Heart Association at the annual Heart Ball Gala on February 21st. “Herren has been involved with the American Heart Association Heart Ball since he and Susan co-chaired the auction committee in 2004,” says Carol Dyer, Senior Heart Ball Director. “They then chaired the entire event in 2005, and have been huge supporters ever since, donating their time to help with everything from sponsorships and auction procurements to logistics and the Sweetheart program. He’s continued to serve on our corporate committee and provide guidance for the success of the ball each year.” The Jerry Davis Memorial award was also given to Herren’s father, Frank Hickingbotham in 1998. “I’m honored to be receiving the Jerry Davis Memorial Award, previously known as the Corporate Community Recognition award. Jerry was a very dear friend and therefore this award is very special to me,” Herren says.

The 2009 Central Arkansas Heart Ball will be February 21 at the Statehouse Convention Center in downtown Little Rock. For more information, contact Carol at 501-379-1176.
