Originally Mary Ann Dawkins considered moving from her River Heights home, but decided instead to renovate with the help of interior designer Meridith Hamilton of MLH Designs. “I began by wanting to redo enclose the porch, but then the idea spread from room to room,” Mary Ann says. “Eventually we were giving the entire house a makeover. I really left it in Meridith’s hands and told her to go for it!”

Meridith and her builder husband, Chuck, worked together on Mary Ann’s home seven years ago, so they were familiar with her taste and lifestyle. “Our overall goal was to freshen up the space,” Meridith says. “All of the elements of the home were beginning to look a little dated.” One of the more dated aspects was the master bathroom. “All of the walls were mirrored, and it seemed too busy,” Meridith says. “The shower was framed and all of the finishes were silver or a high-gloss black. Mary Ann’s only request was to keep the basic layout of the room the same.”

Meridith found immediate inspiration when she discovered the Ann Sacks tiles that now cover the wall. “Once I found that, the other finishes and fixtures all fell into place,” she says. “I wanted to calm down the overall space by using very neutral tones of warm grays and browns with just a few silver accents. Also, so as not to fight with the walls, I focused on clean lines for the fixtures.” The glass shower was redesigned to be frameless and unobtrusive, while the countertops flow seamlessly from the floor to the top where even the sink is flush. The hardware is also flush mounted onto the face of the frameless cabinetry. For extra function, Meridith designed the frameless mirrors at each vanity as medicine cabinets flanked by vertical scones, which emit a glow of indirect light, perfect for task lighting. “I wanted to create a wonderful retreat to prepare for the day or to unwind from it,” she says.
