Let’s talk about the continuing trend today in homes: light colors, fewer items, and making spaces in your home functional, resulting in a fabulous look. There are lots of ways to bring light into a room.
• Paint is an easy fix to create a lighter and larger effect.
Color options are Silver Drop by Behr Paint, Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore and Gentle Cream by Benjamin Moore.
• Next take a look at your windows.
Do you have heavy dark lined drapes that block out light? It might be time to send those heavy drapes packing. You might want to choose light linen fabrics or other light colored fabrics. Also consider making your drapes less complicated in style. In addition, I would suggest using smaller and lighter rods, so your room doesn’t have such a heavy feel. By using a one-inch iron painted in a light gold, or the color of the wall, will further lighten the feeling of the room.
• Extend the light in your rooms by using lighter colored textiles with a soft texture to reflect light.
Great fabrics to select from include textured chenille, burn out velvets, linens, soft boucle and tone-on-tone embroidery fabrics. Any of these will give a layer affect to a room.
• When it comes to furnishings, try to add furniture that blends and that does not dominate the room.
Adding a new coffee table in acrylic, iron and glass or mirrored top is sure to give your room a pop.
• Lastly, add reflective surfaces and lighter rugs to your room.
A mirror placed on the opposite wall from a bank of windows helps to reflect the outdoor light back into the room. In addition, try adding a lighter rug in your space. There are lots of choices in the market. Light colored wood sisal rugs are strong now and an inexpensive choice. Bound rugs are another great choice and there are numerous resources for them. Bound rugs provide a soft and uncomplicated canvas to design your room around.
Just always remember: your home reflects you, how you live, your individual design and what works for you and your family.
Until next time…
