Soft yet edgy, durable yet luxurious; there are few fabrics as versatile and with as much longevity as velvet. From sofas to balloon-sleeved blouses, this smooth, downy textile has graced both upholstery and fashion through the ages. Believed to have originated in China and traveled to Europe via The Silk Road, its roots date back to the 14th century. During this period, it also received its name from the Middle French word velu, which means shaggy. In its purest form, velvet doesn’t have a pattern per se, but has evolved into quilted and cut interpretations, each of which have their own distinctive motifs and appeal.
