Peri-Gay Walker helps a West Little Rock family reinvent a playroom for college- and high school-aged kids
An indoor tree house was the ultimate play space for the brother and sister pair who grew up in this Chenal home. However, now that he is away at college and she is preparing for her senior year, a tree house doesn’t hold quite the same appeal it once had. “Their mom decided it was time for the room to be updated since the kids are older, and she called me to come up with a design and color scheme that would work for the space and make it more usable for the kids now that they are older,” designer Peri-Gay Walker explains.
At the top of the list was a lounging area and a space for friends who were staying over at the family’s house. To accomplish this Walker transformed the tree house into a fun, contemporary loft that includes a padded headboard and custom mattress—perfect for accommodating an extra overnight guest. In addition, she added an oversized pouf in the nook below the loft to offer space for relaxing and watching movies, as well as a new sleeper-sofa sectional.
Aside from these functional updates, the room also received a complete style refresh in the process. Starting with the loft area where wood railing was traded for a sleek and modern wire option that coordinates with the silver leather headboard and beveled glass trim. The palette of the room was also refreshed in the aforementioned silver and shades of blue, including a soft blue wall color that was selected by the homeowners’ daughter. “We brought in the navy accents to ground the rest of the design and make it feel a little more boyish,” Walker notes.
Finishing touches, such as the ikat accent pillows, a navy-and-silver bulletin board, a glass top table, and a futuristic-style ceiling fan pull the look together. Walker also took inspiration from Pinterest to create the gallery wall seen behind the sectional. To create each unique piece of art, she had a baroque-style frame cut into sections and then added framed pictures of the children through the years, along with silver sunburst mirrors to tie in with the mirrors used to trim the loft frame. The result is not only more functional for the family, it’s also given the room a new aesthetic that Walker describes as “sophisticated, but funky and cool.”
