Susan Walsh transforms a Little Rock home using an elegant blue-and-white palette
Several years ago, the owner of this home in Little Rock’s Heights neighborhood was looking for some help refreshing the recently purchased residence. Her daughter-in-law connected her with designer Susan Walsh, and thus began a yearslong collaboration culminating in an interior that feels dedicated to her favorite color combo.For the overall aesthetic, the client had a simple request. “Her only requirements were blues and whites,” Susan says. “I was curating items for her house, and she understood that it takes time and research, and she was good with that.” They started the project with a meeting at the client’s former home, determining which pieces could translate to the new space. These would become the anchor pieces Susan incorporated into the new house in an updated way.

Architect Jason Landrum, a partner with The Wilcox Group, and his wife Dana worked closely with Tina Boyd of Boyd Homes, Inc. to design and build their Craftsman-style home in downtown Little Rock. The rooflines and the shed dormers pair perfectly with the exposed rafter tails and oversized porch columns to create a true Craftsman-style gem. The taller corner posts of the quaint picket fence are a nod to the team’s attention to detail, and their placement doesn’t obstruct the views from inside the home. The detailed woodworkings of the door and the unique house numbers stay true to the period of the home.
Originally in desperate need of repair, the Rogers home of Bob and Bonnie Crafton has experience a resurgence of attention thanks to their diligent remodeling. “It was dull both inside and out,” Bob says. Along with new landscaping, fencing and driveways, the Craftons also repainted the exterior and added welcoming furniture to the two-level front porches. The home is now a testament to its rich Southern plantation-style roots with its bright red door, porch swing and all-white columns and railings.
The sharp angles and juxtaposition of natural elements and time-tested design make the home of Wes and Keri Morris a true standout. Referencing aspects of Prairie School and Arts and Crafts designs of the 1920s and 1930s, architect Albert Skiles crafted the façade of this northwest Arkansas home utilizing stone and cedar from the property. The multiple low-pitched and layered rooflines and the exposed timber framing are complemented by the stained-glass front door, designed by Keri’s father. “I wanted to incorporate local artists whenever possible, as well as regional forms that recall rural Ozark structures,” Skiles says. The landscape design by All Around Landscaping in Springdale completed the overall look.
The French Country style is one of classic design and regal details. The exterior of the Little Rock home of builder Fred Lord and his wife Karen offers layers upon layers of intriguing aspects, including the lush ivy, which winds its away across the front and sides of the house. Architecturally inspired accent pieces from the tall clay fountain to the topiaries flanking the front door make this a very inviting home. The Old-World feel is heightened with the manicured hedges, circular courtyard and exquisite iron railings and door.
