Just a short drive from Fayetteville, these two northwest Arkansas towns constantly draw crowds to enjoy a great local retail scene, ranging from high fashion to home furnishings. Stellar Sun formed in 1991 as a Little Rock based company that specializes in renewable energy technologies with a focus on solar water heating, solar electric systems and engineering design services. Woodglen Park—the solar subdivision that owner Bill Ball is creating in Little Rock—offers homes that meet a high standard of energy efficiency, incorporate passive solar design and produce at least 50 percent of their electrical usage from solar photovoltaics.

To minimize the environmental footprint of your home, Ball suggests looking for building materials that are not a scarce resource, involve the least amount of energy to produce or extract from the Earth and leave little to no damage in the process. “Try to find materials that are high in recycled content and are near or indigenous to your region,” he says.

River Rock Builders
Keith Wingfield, certified green building and certified green professional, of River Rock Builders in Little Rock, began focusing on green building several years ago with an interest in energy-saving features. “This is why River Rock Builders joined the Energy Star program in 2006,” Wingfield says. “Energy Star is a program created through the EPA that establishes guidelines for energy performance. Building our homes to the Energy Star certification rules ensures that the energy performance of the home is 15 percent more efficient than the National Energy Code requires.”

One key to Wingfield’s high energy efficiency lies with the materials he chooses, including Thermawrap from Dupont. “This is a highly reflective moisture barrier that we wrap each house in to prevent moisture intrusion,” he says. “We also install tankless water heaters, low-E argon gas-filled window and door glass and high-efficiency heating and cooling equipment.”

Chris and Paige Arnold found it only fitting that their lively, fun-loving daughter, Spencer Paige, have a bedroom that matched her sparkling personality, and they called on close friend and interior designer Kimberly Harper of Kimberly Harper Interiors in Rogers to make it happen. The room makeover was a surprise for Spencer Paige’s eighth birthday, and Kimberly worked hard to make the space just right for a growing girl. “Before we started, the room was in a transition from baby to toddler. It was very sweet, but needed a little spark to match Spencer Paige’s personality,” Kimberly says. Paige’s vision for the room was very similar to Kimberly’s. “I wanted a room that wasn’t so little girl, but still wasn’t too big girl.” Spencer Paige is so girly, but she also loves to be funky.”

Paige found inspiration for the one-of-a-kind room in a painting from Kimberly’s in-stock selection. She was immediately drawn to the piece’s Asian influence, as well as its hues, which served as the basis for the room’s color scheme. The walls are covered in a light shade of pink and accented with striking scarlet and fuchsia window treatments by Interior Fabrics & Design in Fayetteville, which are tied back with cheery oversized flowers. “The mix of colors and fun tiebacks added the whimsical, artistic edge we were looking for,” Kimberly says. The room’s cathedral ceiling is centered with a beaded chandelier, providing the room with light and a touch of drama.

The centerpiece of the space is the custom-made headboard of dark cherry wood, upholstered in light green fabric, while multi-colored pillows and an eye-catching, custom comforter by Pillow Talk adorn the bed. Kimberly incorporated a unique mirrored end table as a nightstand, which displays black and white pictures of Spencer Paige’s friends and family and a retro pea-green colored lamp. The room features plenty of seating, from an oversized, upholstered side chair to a glamorous gold seat covered in a stylish leopard print. Two green ottomans serve double duty as both seating and storage space for all of Spencer Paige’s dance costumes. “It’s my most favorite room that I’ve ever had,” says Spencer Paige.

To know what you want to do with your life is a good thing. To actually be doing it with a great deal of success is even better. Interior designer Kimberly Harper of Kimberly Harper Interiors in Fayetteville is doing just that. She has run a flourishing interior design business for more than ten years, and the success that she has enjoyed is a product of her hard work and dedication to her field.

Kimberly’s interest in interior design started at a very young age when her parents began remodeling their North Little Rock home. “I would go with them to meet the designer, and I was really interested in the wallpaper and the paint,” she says. By the time she got to high school her interest and talent had grown even more. She decided to pursue an internship with designer Georg Andersen of Georg Andersen Associates in Conway, and Georg remembers her fondly. “She was one of the most delightful people I’ve ever had on staff,” he says. “She always treated the work as if it was her own business, and her taste level was impeccable.”

After high school Kimberly went on to study interior design at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and opened Kimberly Harper Interiors in Fayetteville five years later.
She is an allied ASID member, Kimberly describes her style as a mix of contemporary and traditional with an added touch of whimsy. She finds inspiration from many different places, including her travels. “I travel a lot,” she says. “When I go somewhere like New York or Dallas, I take lots of pictures.” When designing for her clients, she always tries to recreate their taste, rather than inject her own preferences. “It’s always the client’s style that I’m trying to emulate, and that’s what I focus on.” While Kimberly loves to work from a blank slate, she also enjoys reworking what a client already has. “It’s so fun to go into an existing space that someone doesn’t exactly know what to do with and help to make it better,” she says.

Considering Kimberly’s success, it’s no wonder that she has made the decision to expand her storefront. In August, she’s moving her studio and store from the downtown square in Fayetteville to Rogers. There she hopes to increase the store’s in-stock gift items, while still maintaining and growing the interior design side. “I will have my design studio, fabrics and furniture in Rogers, but we will still do business in Fayetteville and throughout the area,” she says. With her passion for design and her determination to achieve her goals, Kimberly is doing just what she was meant to do, and she loves every minute of it. “I get to do something different every day,” she says. “I simply love my job.”
