After building two homes of her own, Tish DeLozier finds her passion—and launches a business—in design

Inspired by her native South Carolina, Tish wanted the exterior of the home to mimic a Charleston row house.

“I’m a colorful person,” Tish DeLozier says. Upon entering the home she shares with her husband, Patrick, and their three young children, you get an immediate sense of happy at the first sightings of pink, green, orange, and turquoise. “Turquoise is a favorite of mine, so it’s in every room,” she says with a smile. And while the rainbow of hues might be the first thing to catch your eye, thoughtfully executed details, inviting layouts, and efficient organization don’t go unnoticed as you move through the home the DeLoziers built just two years ago.

The Heritage House

On a countryside estate just outside of Little Rock, designer Barbi Rushing creates an heirloom-infused setting for the home and garden she shares with her husband

If antiques could talk, Barbi and Nolan Rushing’s home would have quite the story to tell. The moment you walk through the front door, you are greeted with a sampling of the home’s historic furnishings and elegant works of art, along with traditional fabrics and a soothing palette that seem to complement every piece. Continue to wind your way through the new construction home, which they refer to as Deer Lake, and you’ll soon figure out every piece is not only beautiful, but also meaningful.

Barbi, who owns Barbi Rushing Interiors, has curated the furnishings of each room of the home through the years. She inherited a number of her grandmother’s antiques including everything from furniture to artwork and accessories. “There is a lot of French heritage in my family. My grandmother’s maiden name was Gillette [which is of French origin] and she lived in a beautiful French home in the Heights,” relates Barbi. These much beloved pieces create the basis of the home’s style, which has a strong European influence.

Family time at the Moody household often finds Edward, Angela and their young daughter, Eden, walking the rows of their vegetable garden, sampling cherry tomatoes, examining peppers, picking blackberries or simply stopping to smell the flowers. The bucolic setting might seem at odds with the stately Georgian home and the formal landscape surrounding it, but creating a balance between family friendly and entertaining elegant is just what the Moodys had in mind when they began planning their gardens and grounds.

“My husband and I both like a formal design style with structure and symmetry, which certainly fits with the lines of our house, and in most areas we stayed true to that,” says Angela, “but we also wanted more informal places, including a comfortable guesthouse and a vegetable garden we could tend.”
