Well over a year ago, a hot tip on a stack of old fence wood hanging out on the side of the road came my way and ever since, that same pile of old fence wood has been getting even older in a pile in my backyard. I knew I’d find some use for it…but nothing struck me. No ideas for this shabby pile of sticks. This past weekend, while we were on a backyard cleaning frenzy, I was just about to give up and throw the old boards back to the curb, when I stumbled across this picture from Sweet Pickins Furniture…

I too have an awkwardly narrow wall in my kitchen that would be perfect for such shabby chic letters! A DIY ah-ha moment at its finest. Now to rescue that pile of fence wood and play copycat by recreating E-A-T for my own kitchen.

First, I removed the rusty nails from the boards and wiped them down with a strong dose of cleaner. These guys were filthy.

Then, I measured and cut the pieces needed to assemble the letters. I wanted my letters to end up around 25 inches tall and 17 inches wide.

Out came the staple gun to attach the pieces on the backside.

In no time at all, my new DIY letters were ready to rock.

With the old pile of wood finally out of the backyard and one less awkward wall to deal with, I’d say this impromptu project was a success. I will say though, as easy as this one was, I sure did work up one heck of an appetite.
