Originally built in 1884 so that trains could cross the Arkansas River, the Junction Bridge now offers pedestrians and cyclists a means of traveling between Little Rock’s River Market district and North Little Rock’s Riverfront Park. The nation’s only pedestrian bridge with a lift span, it reopened last year after a decade-long, $5.8 million transformation. Complete with elevators, staircases, benches and even wi-fi access, it’s ready for the next century of use.

Around the Color Wheel

When you arrive at the El Dorado home that designer Andrea Brooks shares with her husband Jay and their two sons, Jay Anthony and Evan, the first thing you notice is her canary-yellow front door. In fact, it’s drawn lots of notice from neighbors as well. “I’ve been trying to slow down traffic on Madison Avenue, and the door definitely did the trick for about a week,” she says.

The fun, whimsical feeling established at the front door is certainly carried throughout the home’s interior. “This house just had a very quirky feel to me when we first moved in,” Andrea says. “It has very traditional bones, but something about it seemed anything but.” The historic home is the ideal showplace for Andrea and Jay’s collection of antiques, some inherited from their families, and some collected from various spots they’ve lived or traveled. However, she maintains a lighthearted atmosphere by pairing classic and contemporary pieces against a backdrop of eye-catching color. “The color scheme doesn’t exactly follow any standard combination,” she says. “It dances around the color wheel but attempts to stick with hues of the same saturation and value.”

Cleo’s West

With locations across the state, Cleo’s is a well-known name to many Arkansans. Design services are available either in-store or on-site, and the design team’s passion lies in helping their clients create special places for their family and friends. “We enlist all efforts to create a wonderful team in any design project, small or large,” Jason says. “We all work very hard and enjoy each design moment there is.” In addition, Cleo’s West carries an impressive number of custom lines, including Rowe, Robin Bruce and Clayton Marcus, which are available in more than 700 fabrics. It’s safe to say that you’ll be able to find exactly what you’re looking for, but if you’re not quite sure what that is, they’re certain to be able to help you figure it out.

For Jason, furniture and design have been a part of his life as long as he can remember. “When I was growing up, it was never a surprise for my parents to wake up in the morning to find the living room furniture had been re-arranged or the dining room had been painted while they were asleep,” he says. “I loved creating a space that I knew my whole family would enjoy.” Gradually, more and more people began seeking out his design services, and at Cleo’s West it became clear that he’d found his calling.Whether he’s seeking out the latest styles or selecting the ideal upholstery, Jason finds helping clients to be the most gratifying part of his career. “All our customers know that they’ve purchased quality furniture at amazing low prices, and they’re so excited,” he says.

Magnolia

A Tour to Remember

Each year, the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute Auxiliary at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences holds Cooks Tour, a unique event combining the best in kitchen design with fine cuisine. During the 2009 Cooks Tour, four homeowners will open their houses to visitors, while chefs from some of Little Rock’s finest restaurants will prepare dishes for tour participants to sample. Included in this year’s tour is the home of Sherrie and Zsolt Sander, a space that bridges the gap between culinary function and family togetherness.

When Sherrie and Zsolt began building their home, they knew their kitchen had to meet a number of goals. They wanted a space that would be comfortable for family meals with their children, Anna and Krisztian, while also functioning well for serious cooking and large groups. “My husband loves to cook and entertain,” Sherrie says. “He wanted a space that could be enjoyed by many people, but we also wanted it to be a special gathering place for the family.”

Not only is the space a blend of each family member’s needs, it also combines their varying tastes. “Every area shows a part of who we are,” Sherrie says. The sophisticated space includes rich, dark cabinetry, which was Zsolt’s request, finished with modern hardware selected by Sherrie. With so many different ideas to choose from, the Sandors turned to interior designer Sha Knight to refine the kitchen and provide the ultimate finishing touches.

One of Knight’s biggest contributions was to combine two planned smaller islands into the large central island, one of the kitchen’s most striking elements. “Sha thought it suited our style more, and now it’s one of my favorite parts,” Sherrie says. Perfect for preparing Zsolt’s gourmet meals, it’s also become one of the kids’ favorite spots to do homework. “The kitchen is really where we spent eighty percent of the day,” she says.

The 2009 Cooks Tour will be held from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. on April 19. Tour participants will visit four homes in the Sologne neighborhood of Chenal Valley and sample the food of Evette Brady and Tim Morton of 1620 Restaurant, Mike Selig of Mike Selig’s Vermillion, Scott McGehee of Boulevard Bread Co., John Beachboard of ZAZA Fine Salad and Wood Oven Pizza Co., and Mark Abernathy of Loca Luna and Bene Vita. Monies raised by Cooks Tour 2009 will be used to fund projects benefiting cancer patients in Arkansas.

Spatial Recognition

Kim and Blake Evans’ Fayetteville home sits atop a sloping lot, which played into the overall landscape plan created by exterior designer Daniel Keeley of DK Design in Fayetteville. “The size of the house and its sloping lot made scale a very important factor,” Daniel says. “Especially in terms of how much planting area would be needed to visually ground the house.” Kim wanted the gardens to be very simple and predominantly green and white, so Daniel and his team incorporated lots of evergreens, such as boxwood, laurel and juniper mixed with white Gaura, Crepe Myrtles and carpet roses.  “We did break the green and white rule a little with places patches of Russian sage, which really makes everything pop with its silver foliage and lavender blue flowers,” Daniel says. “Once the landscape was determined, we moved on to furnishing the outdoor spaces.”

Thanks to the size of the lot, Daniel was able to craft several outdoor living areas. “I was guided by the interior colors from the adjacent rooms, and we were lucky because the house’s design naturally defined several outdoor living spaces through the hardscapes. That allowed us to focus on furnishings, rather than having to spend a lot of effort establishing privacy and visual delineation,” he says.

Four main living areas make up the backyard, each with its own personality and function. The main outdoor room is referred to as the cabana, and it’s enclosed on three sides and includes a kitchen. “We wanted this to be a multifunctional space, but more importantly we wanted it to be comfortable,” Daniel says. “This is where Kim, Blake and their family and friends gather to cook out, watch television or just enjoy being outside.” Surrounding the pool, Daniel placed sleek chaise lounges with bolster pillows for sunning. The outdoor fireplace is positioned near the pool, and it’s just steps from the master bedroom. “We envisioned this area as an intimate relaxation spot mainly for Kim and Blake,” Daniel says. “We furnished it accordingly with a couple of comfortable chairs, an ottoman upholstered in outdoor leather and a small side table for drinks and snacks.”

The sunken living space, positioned outside the downstairs guest suite, is known as the portico, thanks to its small covered-porch entry. “We considered this a secret oasis to be enjoyed by guests and the homeowners alike,” Daniel says. “It offers cushioned furniture and a soothing fountain, and is the perfect place for morning coffee, evening wine or curling up and reading a book.” Finally the veranda is the upstairs covered balcony located off of the game room. “We definitely wanted to carry the social feel of the game room outdoors, and we installed a large sofa, chairs and a portable ottoman for plenty of seating. ”
