Building History: Tuf Nut Lofts

During the 1920s economic boom in downtown Little Rock, many new commercial buildings were constructed to accommodate the rapid growth. Among them is the Little Rock Tent & Awning building at 423 East Third Street, which was constructed in 1927 and is a part of the Tuf Nut Historic District. The dark-red brick structure includes large multiple-pane windows with awnings spanning the elevation, and bands of cast concrete decorating the parapet, or roof line, as well as the window ledges. In 1930, Little Rock Tent & Awning bought the nearby Tuf Nut Garment Manufacturing Company, relocating that business to the East Third Street building and combining their manufacturing production.

Chris Goddard enlivens a linear kitchen with color and character


Erin and Jayme Smith’s existing Fayetteville kitchen was—to use a chef’s terminology—a bit bland. “It was just a very classic, white, simple kitchen—very understated,” recalls designer Chris Goddard of Goddard Design Group. “Zero color and zero detail.” But not for long. Chris notes the Smiths enlisted him to “elevate it and make it a little more sophisticated with a bit of edge.” To accomplish this, he used unique elements to define the space. “We wanted a juxtaposition of something a little more modern and edgy set in a very traditional environment, and also wanted it to have a bit of a European flair,” he adds.
