Designer Chandler Bailey works with a Little Rock couple to brighten the hub of their home

When Drs. Debra and David Becton called Chandler Bailey of B. Interiors, they were looking for a whole home refresh. “They had lived here for a while, and there was a lot of brown and beige,” Chandler recalls. “Everything was still in good shape, but color-wise it was not the scheme they wanted.” While the designer helped with multiple areas throughout the house, she took a particular interest in the kitchen, which is a hangout for the Bectons as well as their children and grandchildren who all live nearby. “This is where they come for Thanksgiving and Christmas. They love having the open plan, and the island creates the perfect flow with extra seating for lots of people,” Chandler says.

As they say, timing is everything. That’s why Vicki and Terry Burnett waited 12 years before breaking ground on their new home in Roland. “We had a lot of time to dream and imagine. We just wanted the timing to be right,” Vicki says. When the perfect opportunity finally did come, Vicki called on a dear friend, Mona Thompson of Providence Design, to guide the home’s interior design, and builder Bill Parkinson of Parkinson Building Group to bring the team’s vision to fruition. Mona had worked with the couple on their previous residence, which had a more traditional style than the open, transitional feel they desired for their new home. “They wanted something completely different and more casual this time,” the designer says.

When Jill Storey Matthews first laid eyes on her Heights cottage, it had an overgrown exterior and dark interior palette. “You almost couldn’t see it from the street but I knew it had a lot of potential,” she says. In Little Rock, a team of professionals thoughtfully updates a home designed by architect Fay Jones

Maintaining integrity was top priority when interior designer Brittany Nixon Brun and architectural designer Rodney Parham began to update a home by famed Arkansas architect Fay Jones. Built in 1964, Pine Knoll, as the property is known, was in good condition when the new owners purchased it; however, after almost 60 years, it was time to modernize its amenities.

“I was kind of nervous about working on an icon’s project,” Rodney says of Jones, who is the namesake of the University of Arkansas School of Architecture and Design. “I told everyone in my office that I was going to touch it with a feather,” he adds of his careful approach. The homeowners echoed this desire for mindfulness as they spent days researching decisions, sourcing products, and going about the process hand-in-hand with both Rodney and Brittany. “In working on the house, whenever we came to a challenge, we’d always ask ourselves, What would Fay do?” one of the owners says. The saying became a type of mantra for the design team in solving for both planned updates as well as the unforeseen. “This is a case of the right person buying the right house,” Brittany adds. “They wanted everything to feel cohesive and look like it has always been in place.”

When Lauren and Alex Blass learned they were expecting their first child, they put in a call to designer Melissa Haynes to help them plan a sweet nursery for their baby boy. However, as items began to arrive and the installation date neared, they called her back to say they were having second thoughts—not about the nursery design, but about their home. “They lived in a newlywed home in Fayetteville, and the closer it came to time for the baby to born, they felt they needed to be nearer to their offices and in a larger family home,” Melissa explains.
