Neutral Colors of the Year provide a backdrop for a range of hues to shine
As the calendar page turns to 2026, paint companies and Pantone Color Institute alike have announced their Color of the Year, and three of the top reveals are decidedly neutral. For starters, Pantone’s “Cloud Dancer,” is a “lofty white that serves as a symbol of calming influence in a society rediscovering the value of quiet reflection.” It is meant to allow space for creativity and room to ponder. Sherwin-Williams’ “Universal Khaki” has a familiar, warm and cozy feel that seems to go with anything—much like a well-loved pair of khaki pants. “‘Universal Khaki’ is the easygoing neutral that makes every room feel pulled together. Its warm, earthy tone works with natural finishes, crisp whites, or bold pops of color—bringing timeless style to your home,” says Sue Wadden, the brand’s Director of Color Marketing and Trendsight Team Leader. In the same vein, “Silhouette” from Benjamin Moore is an umber hue with espresso and charcoal inspirations that are “reminiscent of tailored suiting.”
