During our photo shoot at architects Jennifer Herron and Jeff Horton’s new home in Little Rock, we saw their efficient open kitchen in action, as their daughter, Ava, and son, Jake, pitched in on meal prep and table setting.
It reminded me of a similarly sleek kitchen the architects designed for another Little Rock family, where open spaces offer plenty of room for every member of the family to help. You can see the full story here.

What makes these rooms work so well is their organization, starting with clean-lined architecture and followed with cabinetry and shelving that keeps everything in its place.
From spice racks, drop-down cutting boards and knive storage to dinnerware.
And while both homeowners prefer sleek, neutral materials that are easy to clean–like the stainless steel Zephyr hood and LivingStone solid surfacing–
they also add doses of color with bright modern furniture and lighting that’s pure fun.
Like these chairs from Calligaris and Eames, and this Ingo Maurer light fixture made of Campari bottles. What makes these rooms work? Efficient good looks and family fun.
