We’re lucky to have tons of bungalow and craftsman-style homes here in Arkansas, nestled into the hills (like Hillcrest in Little Rock) and in the historic districts throughout the state. Here’s an idea for an updated Craftsman kitchen, so you can keep the style but get the benefit of new appliances and a fresh look.

Room of the Week 2.4.10 My Family Room

We’ve been talking home organization this week, with a great blog post yesterday from organizational expert and blogger extraordinaire Katie Buchanan of Little Rock Paper Scissors. She talks about organizing her own closet, so I thought I’d air some of my own dirty laundry and reveal a before and after organization project as well.

Here’s what my family room looked like when we moved to Fayetteville. Yes, decidedly un-glamorous. We had some organizing work to do.

Here’s my 5 Step Program:

1. Add built ins for corralling all that electronic mess, plus games, books and more

Yes, that really is the same space where the TV was on the table. See what built in storage can do?Â And yes, that is me, showing how easy the new space is to use :)Â And our little puppy Roxy. This was a few years back and Roxy is now too big for that dog bed. But the shelves still work great.

2. Choose multi-purpose furniture

We found a coffee table that could hold games, books and that slew of magazines that I always have around…occupational hazard. Same for the side tables, they have shelves below for more magazines (all my copies of At Home, of course).

3. Use bins and boxes

This one goes without saying…boxes and properly-used (not junk piled) bins are an organizer’s best friends. I marked the photo boxes with pictures showing which family member’s stuff was in each box. Which leads to the next point…

4. Get the family stuff out of the “save” pile and somewhere you can enjoy it

While I was rummaging through all those years of great pre-school art, hand prints, and such, I decided to put it somewhere I could see it. Since that cute little handprint now belongs to a 14 year old, it’s great to be able to look back daily and enjoy these.

5. Sit back and enjoy your hard work. Find a game in that well-organized bin and play it with the kids. Enjoy that puppy.

In the interest of full disclosure…no, my house is not this neat on a daily basis. A friend of mine at Ladies Home Journal liked the home organization concept and published this back in 2007. And my good friend, photographer Dan Piassick, took these great shots. Our house always looks lived in, my photography skills are no where near this good, and it did take months to find these items, have the shelves made, etc.

But it was worth it! We spend more time in that room than any other one in the house.

Thanks to all our friends and fans who commented on our blog and Facebook page and voted for their favorite cover for the November issue. Both of the lovely choices are from a feature on interior designer Mona Thompson’s (of Providence Ltd.) own home.Â And the winner is…..

Of the 157 votes we received, 94 were in favor of this option, noting how inviting the open doors and roaring fire looked. And since we’re in Arkansas, we can spend our Novembers on the patio!

Those is favor of the living room shot…no worries, we’re running a beautiful full page image as the story intro.

who doesn’t love a great sidechair?

I’m smitten by these chairs in Conway designer Tami Risinger’s lake house in Hot Springs.Â They’re based on a design from the legendary designer Frances Elkins, and Tami used them in just the right way: to make a sculptural statement, turning a small sitting area into a focal point. (if you’re smitten too, she found them in Little Rock at Bear-Hill Interiors).

Tami’s chairs are in good company….I spied them in a recent House Beautiful issue as well! Fresh looks for two very different styles.

Room of the Week 2.9.10 Our Facebook Bath Makeover Challenge

Remember when we asked you to send photos of a boring bathroom to us, something we could make-over with color?

Here it is, reader and Facebook fan Betsy Orr’s bland bathroom in Rogers, and now you can see the bath makeover online as well.

El Dorado-based interior designer Andrea Brooks (another Facebook fan!) stepped up to the color challenge. Her colorful suggestions:

1. Paint the walls Sherwin Williams Open Air, a tranquil light blue that would give the room a feeling similar to this:

2. Paint the cabinet a deep blue/green, an affordable way to update a basic vanity. Here’s the paint and an idea of the end result:

3.Â Andrea suggests adding roman shades in a striped fabric that pulls the blue and green together.

4. Then she suggests adding a range of accessories that would tie together the colors: a fabric for the vanity seat, art for the wall next to the tub, trays and bowls for the counter area, and new knobs/pulls for the vanity. Room of the Week 10.19.10

A rainy day, all around our state. My favorite way to spend an evening with the rain drops on the roof? Propped up in bed, with a big stack of magazines to read, of course.

I spied a few beds in our October issue that would work quite nicely:

This room is calling my name this week–I’m ready to settle into the blue chair and peruse one of the books stacked nearby, some cool and quiet calm on a hot summer day. Interior designer Chris Goddard pulled together this mix of eclectically chic goods, including one of my new favorite accent pieces, Philippe Starck’s Ghost Buster commode. (Chris found this one at SR Hughes).
