The Art Group was founded nearly two decades ago when several Little Rock artists came together to share an art studio. In 2013, the artists officially opened a gallery, The Art Group Gallery, in Pleasant Ridge Shopping Center. Follow along as At Home in Arkansas interviews each of the group’s 17 artists to find out more about their inspirations and processes for creating.

At Home : Many Arkansans know you from your time on Channel 7. How did you make the transition to being an artist?
Ned Perme: Yes, I recently retired from KATV Channel 7 News after a 34-year career as their Chief Meteorologist. Many people may think that I took up painting upon retirement but the fact is that I have been an artist for 18 years. I began with art classes and instruction in 2002 with a number of students. In 2005 I and a group of studying artists formed The Art Group.

AH: What types of mediums do use?
NP: I began my art career working in pastels to learn blending color, lighting and shading. I switched to oil paint shortly after we formed The Art Group. I now am primarily an oil painter but do incorporate acrylic and mixed media, including the use of fused glass, into some paintings.

AH: Do you have a favorite style or subject matter?
NP: I enjoy painting a variety of styles including abstract, contemporary, and modern art. These works are usually on large canvasses using vibrant colors employing a combination of brushes and palette knives. I also paint a number of Arkansas landmarks. Traveling the state for so many years I have seen the beauty The Natural State has to offer.

AH: Where do you create most of your pieces? What do you love about this space?
NP: I create my artwork exclusively at The Art Group Gallery. We have a fine working studio space in the back of the gallery where I and a few of my partners work. It is very relaxing to put on my music and begin the creative process, usually during the morning hours. I especially enjoy working in the gallery when I can meet with customers and spend the day doing what I love.
