 You hear it all the time: just change out your pillows – an easy way for an instant room make-over!

Sounds easy, right? But why isn’t it? Maybe it’s because there are so many choices. You start shopping and become overwhelmed with the selection, not sure about any of them.

Maybe the selection is not that great after all. There are lots of pillows in the stores, but where are the great pillows? The ones that are going to transform my room into something similar to what I see in the magazines?  You may need to consider custom.

The bottom line is that it is NOT that simple. There are many things to consider before buying or designing new pillows, such as color, pattern and what will work with what you already have.

Consider the scale. People tend to buy a lot of small pillows, but fewer, larger pillows make more of a statement.

Mix textures for interest. Linens and velvets, quilted patterns and crewel work.

Soft partial down inserts are preferred over hard foam. A little “karate chop” in the middle is nice.

How about trims? You won’t see tassle and brush trims used much anymore. Simple knife edges or small flanges are really popular. Added details such as coordinating tapes and flat trims and antique embellishments on silk and velvet pillows can be fabulous. Large script monograms are also really nice.

We have a lot of custom pillows made for clients. It’s a definite way to get the look that you want. Pillows add visual comfort to your room and chosen wisely really can give you a fresh new look.

All these decisions can be exhausting, but well worth the effort.
