at home for the holidays : mint julep cup arrangement

 The holidays are always a busy time of hustling and bustling, which is why we think this simple, low-maintenance holiday arrangement from our friend Andrea Brooks is a MUST for any busy entertainer or hostess! Thanks so much for sharing, Andrea!

I love to incorporate fresh greenery into my holiday décor but with our crazy Arkansas weather you can’t always depend on it lasting through the holidays.  I found this great DIY arrangement that will do just that – mine are over a week old and are still looking fresh and festive!  Follow these easy steps to create your own:

How to create the mint julep cup arrangement 1. Cut a piece of green oasis to fit the full size of the cup.  It should fit snugly to help the arrangement stay close to the top of the vase/cup.

2. Add water to fully wet the oasis.

3. Add your cedar branches starting from the outer edges (I like to start at the corners and work in).  When trimming these pieces you will want to keep the outer ones a little longer to give them some drape. 4. Fill in the middle with shorter cedar pieces, pine and berries.  Remember, the more organic it looks the better!

In seconds you have a festive arrangement that will long outlast fresh flowers.  This arrangement can be used throughout your home in several different ways; for example, I have placed several in the windowsill in my kitchen and also as cheerful place settings for the head chairs in my dining room. This historic Little Rock home, which was renovated over a five year period with help of interior designer Garry Mertins, stays true to its traditional heritage and becomes the perfect backdrop for seasonal decor this time of year. Howard Hurst of Tipton & Hurst introduced a holiday floral design scheme to bring out the warm red, brown, gold and bronze undertones in the home’s color palette. Easy vintage holiday decor from Mae’s Emporium

After we featured Mae’s Emporium owner Jessica Graham’s brilliant holiday decor ideas in our December issue, we couldn’t resist asking her to give us a better glimpse at her own festive projects. Along with business partner Lynlee Critz, Graham is here to share her secrets to celebrating Christmas with unique, vintage style!

As two mavens who patiently—and sometimes impatiently—await the day when Santa Baby slips a little something under the tree… Lynlee and I wish nothing more this year than for you to bring vintage jewels into your own holiday festivities. Not just for dressing yourself but also incorporating into your holiday décor! Whether it’s adding a little sparkle to your tablescape and tree, or giving your holiday packages a punch, you are sure to have yourself a very vintage Christmas with just the right amount of fuss!

When needing a touch of joy on your holiday linens, use rhinestone bracelets as napkin rings and wrap them around your starched napkins (making your table an instant glitter fest, our fave)!

Who says shiny bright ornaments are just for hanging? Fill large hurricane vases, bird cages or a vintage bubble gum jar to add a bit of whimsy to their classic style!

Now onto bigger things, and we mean the bigger the better, with brooches that is. Put your guests in their place by using brooches and clip-on earrings as place card holders! Add a little sparkle to your holiday collectibles by arranging brooches around for instant glow.

In our homes, a gift is never complete without adding a bauble or two or three to every package. Take old “bits,” as my bestie calls them, using mismatched vintage clip-ons or backless brooches and simply adhere to any gift for bling that will make them sing! In our opinion, the wrapping is just as important as the gift inside, well more important in fact!

A little fun on Halloween goes a long way. These ghosts are tastefully funny and add a little ‘spook’ to your Halloween decor. Groupings of pumpkins with potted yellow mums complete our fall look. Maiden grass planted in the flower beds will bloom ever so gracefully each fall season.

You will need: Assorted types and sizes of pumpkins, potted mums, blow up ghosts and heavy fishing line.

Step 1 – Use fishing line to tie your ghosts into the trees and grasses. When hanging think of how they would look flying through the air and tie them accordingly.

Step 2 – Place mums in pots and set in yard; mine are on either side of the gate. Then place pumpkins, stacking and leaning, varying colors and sizes for interest.

Art director Mandy Keener styled French Metro owner Renee Hunt’s miniature silver collection for our November issue. Mandy was quite taken by the striking silver/gray color combo, which inspired her to find a few holiday wares for her casa and closet in the same palette. Her picks? A whale ornament for a bit of Christmas whimsy. Sparkly shoes & dress to shimmer around town in. A mirror with a touch of triangles…sold! And her current obsession: “Perfect Storm” nail polish from Estee Lauder.
