A Little Rock entrepreneur encourages fans to “kiss the competition goodbye.”
As a producer, casting agent, stylist and makeup artist, it’s no wonder that Little Rock’s Brooke Duszota is intrigued by all facets of the production world. It was this interest that led her to begin researching the specifics of cosmetic formulation, wanting to create products that were highly pigmented and able to last under hot studio lighting. “With a degree in marketing, years of experience in sales, a background in modeling and certification in makeup, it was a natural transition for me to wholeheartedly embrace the entrepreneurial calling,” she says. In 2009, Duszota created Bellisima Beauty, a line of photo- and film-quality cosmetics.

The next year, Duszota was attending her first Arkansas Razorbacks football game when inspiration struck. “I loved the energy from the fans dressed in red with painted faces, both their enthusiasm and the joy that surrounded the event,” she says. Inspired to contribute to this state pride, she began developing a high-impact red lip gloss especially for Razorback fans. Soon, Woo Pig Smoochie lip gloss was being sold in stores across the state. Since then, Duszota has developed two sorority glosses as well—Kiss a Kappa and Pucker Up Pi Phi, with more in the works.

When you spend your days working for a company that puts sustainability at the forefront of everything it does, it’s easy to find yourself incorporating similar practices into your everyday life. Susie Shinn, the director of development at Habitat for Humanity of Pulaski County, says she loves working for a company that keeps her mindful of the ways she can reduce her carbon footprint.

“Habitat for Humanity, at both the international and local level here in Pulaski County, employs green practices in all our building standards,” Shinn says. “For example, all of our homes must be Level 3 Energy Star certified homes.” Because Habitat for Humanity serves low-income families, the organization also employs energy efficient technologies to keep utility bills affordable after the home building process is complete.
Habitat’s annual fundraiser, ReStore and After, invites others to take part in these green practices. The event features furniture and home décor items from Habitat’s ReStore resale shops that have been transformed into works of art by local artists and supporters. At the end of the evening the pieces are available for purchase. “To date, we have seen more than 40 artists come together to give new life to our ReStore donations,” Shinn says.

As the president and CEO of a children’s therapeutic ranch, a regular day for El Dorado native and occupational therapist Kristi Lowery can include anything from horseback riding to parent support groups. Situated on a beautiful 80-acre ranch just west of El Dorado, HOPE Landing provides occupational, physical and speech-language therapy to children with disabilities. “Each day varies for me,” Lowery says, “but every day, I look forward to seeing the smiles of the children and visiting with their families.”

While many schools are quiet during the summer months, HOPE Landing is full of activity as children of all ages arrive onsite to attend therapy and camps. When Lowery has a moment to get away from the ranch’s high-energy scene, she heads to her parents’ home on Lake Hamilton. “I love being on the water—either on the boat, inner tubing or skiing,” she says.
Lowery describes her summer style as casual and comfortable, with lots of jeans, sandals and jersey dresses, and she loves to experiment with patterns and colors. “However,” she says, “everyone that works at HOPE Landing has a pair of dusty boots under their desk.”

It was only a few years ago that Northwest Arkansas native and fashion fanatic Anna Cottrell decided to begin documenting her clothing creations on her blog, Tulip Louise. What began as a creative outlet soon grew to epic proportions for the budding fashion blogger-turned-stylist. Thanks to lots of hard work and Tulip Louise’s ever-growing readership, Cottrell has emerged as one of Arkansas’ top authorities on style. “One of my wildest dreams came true last year when I was asked to cover backstage at New York Fashion Week for Revlon in February and September,” she says. “Being in the same room with so many of my style icons was truly remarkable and an experience I will not soon forget.”

This month, Cottrell is applying her style know-how closer to home as the fashion correspondent for Northwest Arkansas Fashion Week, which is set to take place at Fayetteville’s Chancellor Hotel March 11-16. Designers and boutiques from Fayetteville and the surrounding areas will gather to celebrate local style with a handful of parties and runway shows featuring clothing for men, women and children. “The designer showcase on Thursday night promises to be a creative and eclectic mix,” Cottrell says. “I love seeing what Northwest Arkansas creatives can dream up for all of us to enjoy.”
