A Family-friendly Weekend in Jonesboro
Gentry Public Library
The recent opening of their new public library has helped put Gentry, Arkansas, located in the northwest corner of the state, on the global map. This year, the American Institute of Architects and the American Library Association included it as one of eight recipients of their prestigious library building award—putting Gentry in the company of much larger cities in places like China, Mexico, California and New York.
Designed by Fayetteville-based Marlon Blackwell Architects, the project involved transforming a 100-year-old hardware store on Gentry’s main street into a 21st century library that combines contemporary design with historic artifact. It was a vision the taxpayers of Gentry embraced as well—they voted for a sales tax to fund the building and are now walking through its doors in record numbers.

Set for Summer

Set the table for summer with a mix of textures and colors and your beautiful tablescape will become the topic of discussion. We began with a Daffodil tablecloth from Xochi and poppy-inspired table runner from The Kitchen Company, Conway. White dinner plates from Paul Michael, Lake Village, balance the vibrant red Vietri salad plates from The Full Moon, Little Rock. We topped them off with Danic cloth napkins in navy, gathered with Marble Curry napkin rings by Xochi, also available at The Kitchen Company. Red pillows, from Ken Rash’s, Little Rock, give a punch of color to any summer table.

Get Away to Greers Ferry Lake
Conveniently located near the center of the state, Greers Ferry Lake has long been a favorite destination for Arkansans interested in fishing, boating and other water sports. In combination with the Little Red River, the area offers unparalleled fishing for both bass and trout, and the lake is known for its sparkling clear water. With the charming city of Heber Springs nearby, vacationers can enjoy both the great outdoors and some small town fun. We contacted some local experts—a storeowner, a 30-year resident and a builder working in the area—for a few tips on where to stay, shop or eat. Our insiders included:
Bonnie Kay Buerkle, artist and owner of Blue Too Guest Cottage on Eden Isle
Michael Denny, owner of The Pickett Fence in Heber Springs
Page Wilson of Paul Page Dwellings, with a residence in Primrose Creek
