The rich history of Faulkner County’s seat lives on through passionate Conwegians

Everyone should love their house like Emily Walter loves hers. Built in 1948, original features such as hardwood floors and colorfully tiled bathrooms captured her design-loving heart, but it was really the home’s location that sealed the deal. “Living in the Robinson Historic District, everyone who lives down here appreciates living in a historic home,” she says. “My neighbors and I have a Christmas brunch every year, and it goes on for three hours because we sit there and talk about our houses like they’re our children. It’s like the fourth member of our family.”

One of Spa City’s most well-known collectors and civic leaders gives his take on the area’s past, present, and future

When Davis Tillman relocated from Memphis to Hot Springs in the early 1990s, he didn’t expect he would still be there more than three decades later. “It was pretty bleak when I first moved here. I thought, I’ll give it two years,” he says. The motivation for his move was to help with his father’s antiques store, Tillman’s Antiques, but he had one good-natured demand: “Part of my negotiation with my father was to be able to buy the building and renovate the upstairs,” he says. These floors above the store became a well-collected backdrop for charity events and parties through the years. With each new face he met, he became more intertwined in the community. “It turned out to be one of the best moves I ever made in my life,” he says. “Hot Springs has been a good place to live, and it’s good to see it going in the right direction. Every year it gets better and better and better.”

Explore the history, culture, and creativity of South Arkansas with a trip to two of its most vibrant towns
After spending time in the entertainment industry in California, Darrin Riley—now a curator with the South Arkansas Historical Preservation Society—had just returned to his childhood home of El Dorado when he was tapped for his talents as a film and history buff. The organization, called SAHPS for short, had recently acquired a collection of memorabilia from El Dorado native and film historian Michael G. Fitzgerald. That project evolved into Darrin’s current role overseeing the museum’s premier draw, the historic Newton House, as well as monthly temporary exhibits. “We want people’s stories, and it’s not always about the oil barons and the huge mercantile owners,” he says. “And that’s really kind of where we run within our galleries—searching out those stories from all the families that created the community.”
