Discover: The Delta

Decorative arts, handmade wares, and old-fashioned hospitality abound in this eastern portion of Arkansas. Join us as we explore the rich heritage and celebrated craftsmanship found in the region.

EATS & SWEETS

From Little Rock, we headed to Lake Village for an early lunch at Rhoda’s Famous Tamales. The endearing diner serves up beef and chicken tamales, along with yams and a variety of pies. Our mouths are still watering for another piece of the pecan pie! Dine here and you’ll enjoy the food as much as you’ll enjoy visiting with Mrs. Rhoda herself.

After making the rest of your stops in the region, we suggest an afternoon snack from Ray’s Dairy Maid. Located just outside of Helena, on Highway 49, Ray’s is known for their fried pies. We recommend trying the chocolate- or apple-filled Southern delicacies.

LOCAL FINDS

Our first stop of the day was at an Arkansas-made icon, Miller’s Mud Mill (870-382-5277, millersmudmill.com) in Dumas. Opened in the late 1980s by potter Gail Miller, the store is a must-visit on the list of anyone who lives in or travels through the area. Miller’s earth-toned pottery pieces—which take the form of everything from mugs and platters to vases and decorative wares—fill the store, beckoning to shoppers to display them in their own homes.

From Dumas, we drove on to Lake Village where you’ll find more locally made home furnishings and wares, along with plenty of decorative items, at Paul Michael Company (800-732-3722, paulmichaelcompany.com). We love the Arkansas-made cutting boards as well as the practical pieces of furniture and reclaimed-wood wall letters, all designed and made by Paul Michael. On the day we visited, the team was beginning to display the store’s huge Christmas and holiday décor offering.

Continuing our delightful trek through the Delta, our next stop was Helena, where we found two charming stores in one historic building. The first shop, Handworks (870-338-4340, handworkshelena.com) carries many items that—as implied by their name—are handmade. From Helena-produced WAX candles to Arkansas’ own Soaps of the Delta, the shop overflows with gift items that have both beauty and heritage. What’s more, they also offer bridal registry, featuring sought-after, quality lines such as Fortunata, Juliska, and Montes Doggett. Bella (870-338-4340) is the second shop housed in the space. As a women’s clothier, the shop offers a variety of colorful options for any occasion, from date night to tailgating. You’ll find lines such as Free People, Nally & Millie, and Kendra Scott jewelry, along with a great selection of basics that can be monogrammed.

Next, we headed to Something Special (870-338-7277), where we were greeted with a huge selection of all things home. From the collegiate-themed items (which include Arkansas as well as nearby Mississippi schools) to the bridal registry offerings, such as Annie Glass and Vietri, this is the place to find kitchen and entertaining wares. Plus, it’s the perfect place to pick up a card, a set of cocktail napkins, or a gourmet food item before heading to a get-together.

WHERE TO STAY

Want to spend a few days exploring the Delta? We suggest heading to The Alluvian (866-600-5201, thealluvian.com) in Greenwood, Mississippi, for an unparalleled taste of Southern culture with a heavy side of hospitality. While you’re staying at the hotel’s luxurious accommodations, be sure to visit the spa to pamper yourself, and dine in Giardina’s Restaurant, which offers steaks, seafood, and pasta. If you feel like trying your own hand at the culinary arts, take a lesson at the much-esteemed Viking Cooking School, which offers classes for all skill levels.

EATS & SWEETS

To fuel up before you start your adventure, there’s no better spot to snag a sweet breakfast than Fayetteville’s own Rick’s Bakery. Step inside, and Razorback-themed décor greets you along with the comforting scent of fresh-baked goods. You’ll feel inexplicably drawn to the rows of donuts, muffins, bagels, and pastries. Be sure to purchase a few petit fours for the road. The bakery also creates fabulous wedding and specialty cakes and offers delicious salads and sandwiches for lunch.

When you’re ready for a midday bite, we recommend the healthy fare at Greenhouse Grille, a restaurant that creates “conscious cuisine” through the use of fresh ingredients—including local and organic products whenever possible—and sustainable business practices. On the day we dined, we had the Parmesan and herb risotto balls, which were spectacular! We also loved the fresh fish tacos with organic hummus paired with a glass of natural orange soda.

For a delectable dinner, venture into downtown Bentonville to the charming Tusk & Trotter restaurant where you’ll experience award-winning cuisine. This place is sure to impress even the most widely traveled foodie, yet the casual, family-friendly atmosphere is welcoming and comfortable. Owner and executive chef Rob Nelson serves up an exquisite charcuterie and cheese board, a bacon and melon salad reminiscent of Tuscany, and—most notably—entrées including pig “wings,” pig ears, and baby-back ribs. This Northwest Arkansas joint offers Southern grub with sophisticated flair.

LOCAL FINDS

You simply can’t visit Fayetteville without celebrating the Hogs. Sara Kathryn’s Ltd. (479-444-9991, sarakathryns.com) has a new collection of Razorbacks gifts, just in time for summer birthdays and tailgating. The gift shop now offers online bridal registry, which includes anything a newlywed could need: china (to which you can add the couple’s monogram!), flatware, table linens, stemware, home accents, luxury bedding, and more. Sara Kathryn’s also offers free shipping for online orders. Whether you’re a bride-to-be or shopping for a special gift, you’re sure to find a cherished piece that will last a lifetime.

While we’re talking about weddings, we know just the place for brides and guests to find the perfect dress. Visit Northwest Arkansas’ premier bridal, formal, and occasion specialty boutique, Tesori (479-966-4622, tesoribridalformal.com). Brides, you can make an appointment online, and the talented and attentive staff will assist you in your quest for a dream dress from lines such as Hayley Paige and Nicole Miller. While you’re visiting the Fayetteville shop, you can also find dresses for your bridesmaids.

Owner Kirsten Blowers stocks the shop with cute tees to celebrate your state, your sorority, and the South in general, along with on-trend styles such as dip-dyed and crochet dresses, beach tunics, and playful rompers. Pop in, and the stylish staff will help you find the perfect outfit for a weekend getaway, a girls’ night out, or any local event.

Step next door to The Independent Denim & Essentials (479-301-2114, theindependent-man.com) to find your man new casual attire. He’ll look dapper in dark indigo jeans, oxford shoes, and VK Nagrani socks. The shop also offers quality swim trunks and aviator sunglasses for summer weekends at the lake, as well as a variety of gifts including flasks, iPhone accessories, leather watches, and more.

If you’re a lover of furnishings with character, you must visit French Quarters (479-443-3355, french-quarters.com) while you’re in Fayetteville. The antique shop is packed with amazing pieces. Named one of the “Top 200 Places to Shop in the South” by Southern Living, the store carries antiques from 18th- and 19th-century France and other parts of Europe. Owners Chris Bronson and Storm Carr personally hand-select each piece on their travels abroad. Chris’ more than 25 years of experience as an antique buyer and decorator allow her to bring a taste of chateâu into your home.

Whether you’re hosting a holiday get-together, refreshing your space, or looking for a great gift, Winterberry Home (479-715-6009, winterberryhome.com), located in Rogers, has everything you need. When we visited, we were charmed by the light and airy space, along with a lovely tablescape that had us dreaming of al fresco evenings. Wander through the store, and you’ll find furnishings, accessories, rugs, bath and beauty products, candles, and many more goodies. The back of the store features new bedding by Pine Cone Hill and Pom Pom, and they also carry dinnerware by Vietri, Juliska, Arte Italica, and Beatriz Ball.

Calling all lovers of cooking and home goods! The darling shop Euna Mae’s (479-419-9690, eunamaes.com) offers heirloom-worthy kitchenware that is both handsome and practical. Owner Amy Nelson Hannon stocks the shop with character-rich newly made goods. She and her team also offer warm, fresh-made biscuits paired with local jellies every Saturday from 10-2 in their in-store kitchen! It’s impossible not to feel delighted in this shop, which is located in a lovely white building just off West Sunset Avenue in Springdale.

For an educational stop, head to The Walmart Museum (479-273-1329; corporate.walmart.com) in Bentonville, which is housed in the location of Sam Walton’s original 5&10 on the town square. The store will transport you back in time, and the interactive exhibit gallery will teach you how the dime store became the global leader in retail. While you’re there, be sure to visit the Spark Café Soda Fountain, which offers old-fashioned treats—perfect for a sweet afternoon pick-me-up.

MAKE IT HOME

Creating or updating your nest in Northwest Arkansas is easy to do when you know the right people to call. We paid visits to our favorite design resources on our trip, and we’re sure you’ll love what they have to offer.

You must see Goddard Design Group’s (479-521-2592, goddarddesigngroup.com) 2,000-square-foot Fayetteville showroom where you’ll find floor-to-ceiling shelving that houses one of the largest fabric, wallpaper, and furnishing sample libraries in the state. The mixed collection of ultra-contemporary and antique furniture, as well as art, embodies principal designer Chris Goddard’s eclectic style, which is based on savoir faire and l’art de vivre—the arts of knowing and living well. This extensive showroom offers an inspirational setting where you can meet with the talented team and discuss their design services that will help you achieve your dream space.

Next, visit the newly opened IF&D Home (479-444-0222), located beside its sister shop, Interior Fabrics & Design (designerdiscountdraperies.com), on North Steele Boulevard in Fayetteville. Here, not only can you enjoy the largest fabric showroom in Northwest Arkansas, with designer fabrics direct from the mill, but you can also browse the newest, quality home furnishings available at the lowest prices in the home goods store. Since 2007, owner Melissa Haynes has created chic spaces that incorporate playful color and pattern as well as subtle trendy details. Her full-service residential and commercial design firm covers all aspects of interior design, including historical renovations, new residences, urban condominiums, rural farmhouses, and upscale commercial spaces.

With full-service design consulting for residential and commercial properties, as well as 3,000 square feet of showroom space, Fayetteville-based Whiteline Designs (479-287-4222, whitelinedesigns.net) produces clean and elegant spaces. Pay a visit to owner Lee Anne Henry and her talented staff for an expert consultation as well as a wide selection of furniture, accessories, flooring, fixtures, tile, wallpaper, and more. To experience their style first-hand, see the in-store, full-scale master bath and kitchen, which mix traditional style with contemporary flair. What’s more, you can shop local in the Arkansas-made art gallery!

The recently opened shop offers a carefully curated selection of home accents, rugs, lighting, original paintings, faux botanicals, James Hayes blown glass, candles, gifts, and more. We were particularly fond of a cute set of dogs made from wicker when we visited, as well as the great selection of colorful pieces—all displayed in coordinated groupings for easy shopping.

On our trip, we also had the opportunity to attend a fabulous event at Springdale’s Harper Howey Interiors (479-750-7300), the alluring design shop owned by Kimberly Harper and Cynthia Howey Tune. Located in a charming, vintage schoolhouse, the homey space features a collection of well-known furniture brands and decorative accessories, many of which the pair use in their interior design projects for clients around the state. If you like the store’s calm and cool feel, consult with them on your own home renovation.

Nestled in the Ouachita Mountains, this lakeside town may conjure up thoughts of historic bathhouses or horse racing at Oaklawn Park, but it also offers some of our favorite resources for the home, plus restaurants and one-of-a-kind boutiques. Follow along for our top places to visit in the Spa City.

EATS & SWEETS

Start your adventure with breakfast at The Pancake Shop, one of the oldest family-owned and -operated restaurants in the state. Take your pick of favorite items, all made daily. Since it’s a local hot spot, you may have to wait—but even this is a treat. You’ll be directed next door to The Savory Pantry, their specialty food store, which offers premium ingredients and delicacies in the shop and online. Sip a cup of coffee or browse the selection of jams, oils, and mixes while you wait.

After discovering the historic downtown area, pop in Café 1217 (501-318-1094, cafe1217.net) for a satisfying lunch in a cheerful space. Here, chef, founder, and owner Diana Bratton creates an inventive menu that changes monthly. When we dined there, our favorites included the 1217 Tomato Soup and a roasted vegetable panini. All made from scratch, each bite was exquisite and fresh.

After you visit a few unrivaled boutiques, you’ll need an afternoon break. There’s no better spot to unwind than the Superior Bathhouse Brewery & Distillery, located inside one of the downtown row’s historic bathhouses. The restaurant brews fine craft beers from the town’s natural hot spring water. They also offer spirits and non-alcoholic beverages. We recommend sharing a few of their small plates, including the Southern black-eyed pea hummus and warm, creamy buffalo chicken dip. To satisfy your sweet tooth, we suggest indulging in a cone of fresh-made gelato.

If you’re looking for a great dinner spot, head to Cajun Boilers (501-767-5695, cajunboilers.com), a staple for residents of the Spa City as well as visitors. Sample their fried alligator bites or crawfish tails, and try the traditional gumbo dinner for your entrée. The restaurant will also cater your next event or meeting if your party craves southern grub.

LOCAL FINDS

If you’re in the market for your own piece of history, you’ll find the finest at Tillman’s Antiques (501-624-4083). Owner David Tillman curates the shop with rare antiques, estate jewelry, fine glass, and other collectibles from around the globe. The selection also includes two new notable designer jewelry lines: Lafonn, crafted for elegance and infinite wear, and Ronaldo, a collection handmade in the United States. Each garners attention for not only their beauty, but also their reasonable price points. Also notice the stunning Venetian Blackamoor brooch shown here. Blackamoor figures are typically male, carved from ebony or painted black, depicted with a head covering and dressed in rich jewels and gold leaf. Even the most selective customer is sure to find what will become a beloved treasure.

For a summer wardrobe update, we know just the boutiques you’ll want to visit. Refined, yet comfortable, the lines at Accessory Gallery and Sparkle (501-321-9168) will clothe you in a stylishly timeless look year-round. You’ll feel welcomed by the open shop while you browse the large selection of Julio Designs jewelry, made with both vintage and contemporary materials, and Jeff Lieb custom jewelry. Our other favorites include Joseph Ribkoff apparel and Brighton jewelry, both of which are exclusive to the shop.

The mod, distinctive pieces at Ciao Bella (501-262-2201) will get you in the mood for summer. Upon entering, pops of color will catch your eye from the clothing and jewelry to the décor. Find a festive summer ensemble with Citizens of Humanity distressed jeans, Lane boots, Dolce Vita sandals, kimonos, cheerful pom-pom shorts (one of our favorite finds), or PilyQ swimwear. You’ll leave feeling prepped for a day on Lake Hamilton or an evening rendezvous.

Next, pay a visit to Luxe Boutique (501-520-2333) on Cornerstone Boulevard. The interior of the store— which is filled with fun details, including a black-and-white striped accent wall and bright paintings—is as boldly alluring as the lines sold there. Peruse the wide selection of bohemian styles from Chaser, Show Me Your MuMu, BB Dakota, Goddis, Whitney Eve, Free People, and more. Notice the heaps of fabulous premium denim from Hudson, AG, Mother, Current/Elliott, and Henry and Belle. EATS & SWEETS

Start your adventure with a breakfast bite at Rosalia’s Family Bakery, located on Kavanaugh Boulveard. Have the croissant you’ve been craving with a chai tea latte. When you build up your appetite again, we recommend lunch at Boulevard Bread Company, which has several locations around the city and serves a mix of fresh salads and sandwiches, as well as charcuterie, artisan cheeses, and other local products. Keep your eyes peeled for their baked sweets, too.

Later in the day, when you’re looking for an afternoon treat, head to the Green Corner Store, located in the popular South Main (SoMa) area for handcrafted ice cream by Loblolly Creamery. Pair it with a fizzy soda to cool down on a hot summer day. Discover: Conway

For the inaugural edition of our new “Discover” feature, the At Home team traveled just thirty minutes from our office to Conway. Filled with a mix of modern boutiques, quaint antique and home décor shops, and delightful eateries, this city has something for everyone. Follow along to experience it as the natives do.

EATS & SWEETS While they may be known for their “scratch-made” cheese dip, we suggest breakfast at Stoby’s. This cozy Conway staple is a favorite of local college kids and families alike. Try the thick, warm biscuits, colossal cinnamon rolls or pink strawberry pancakes topped with a generous dollop of whipped cream. By your second cup of coffee, you’ll feel right at home.

While you’re in the neighborhood, walk across the back parking lot to PattiCakes Bakery where the sugary scents of coconut meringue pie, red velvet cupcakes, and cake pops are enough to tempt any sweet tooth. The bakery devotes itself to serving desserts reminiscent of a childhood trip to grandma’s house. Patti herself will hand you a cupcake catered to your tastes (peanut butter chocolate, perhaps?) in a tiny Chinese takeout box. Never mind that it’s only 10 a.m., you can always save it for an afternoon snack.

When you’re ready for lunch, drive to historic downtown Conway to sample the fare at Cross Creek Sandwich Shop. Attached to Jennifer’s Antiques, this down-to-earth eatery offers fresh choices in a vintage setting. Try their Cross Creek chicken salad or turkey bacon wrap, and be sure to save room for a heaping piece of strawberry pie. Pop in Jennifer’s after you eat to hunt for treasures of your own.

Finally, if you’re looking for a divine dinner spot, dine at Mike’s Place on Front Street where you’ll experience a taste of the Deep South. We suggest the seafood crepes or New York strip.

LOCAL FINDS Wander down Oak Street, a charming strip of boutiques, antique shops, and home décor stores. Grand on Oak (501-499-6436; grandonoak.com) beckons with its welcoming yellow-and-white striped awning. Owner Sena Lovette-Crafton will show you the entirety of the boutique and gift shop (it’s huge!), filled with colorful spring dresses, chic cowboy boots, fragrances, handbags, and more. Go ahead—buy those trend-setting sunglasses for your next beach vacation.

Men and women alike will appreciate the style and sophistication at Bell & Sward (501-504-6880; bellandsward.com), a gentlemen’s clothier with such class it’s hard to resist purchasing a Collared Greens bow tie.
