At Home in Arkansas: Your son Sawyer’s room is so colorful and fun. What was your inspiration?

Homeowner Katie Henry: I have always been drawn to colorful, modern design, but didn’t necessarily want that look in my entire house. This room was a great place to implement that style. When we moved into this house, we were expecting our daughter, so it was a good time to move Sawyer into a toddler room, and I wanted to create a room that would be fun, bright and transitional as he grows older.

Tell us about the stencil on the wall and how you created it.

I wanted to create an accent wall in his room and could not find any wallpaper that fit my concept. After looking online for a few days, I found the stencil from a shop on Etsy. When I received it in the mail, I realized that it was not something I was patient or talented enough to paint without mistakes. I hired someone to paint it and it turned out to be quite the mathematical task to line up everything correctly. She did an amazing job and I love how it turned out.

Will in the Wild

At Home in Arkansas: The nursery you created for Will is so imaginative. What was your inspiration for this space?

Homeowner Laura Keener: My husband, Michael, and I decided to not find out the baby’s gender before he was born, so the main requirement for the nursery was that it be gender neutral. I enlisted the help of my sister-in-law, [At Home in Arkansas art director] Mandy Keener, and we used Pinterest to find all sorts of ideas and communicate those with each other.

You captured a nice balance of soothing blues with pops of bright colors throughout.

Mandy Keener: I’m obsessed with color, so I wanted to pump in as much of it as I could without it being overwhelming.

Blue Belle

At Home in Arkansas: Blue is an unexpected color in a baby girl’s room. What inspired the color palette in 9-month-old Catherine Riley’s nursery?

Homeowner Sarah Brantley: I’ve always loved blue bedrooms and knew that was the direction I wanted to go here. It’s my favorite color and it’s soothing. I found all of the fabric at Cynthia East, and the print for the crib skirt helped determine the palette and pull it all together.

Not knowing the gender can be challenging when designing a nursery. Which aspects were ready ahead of time and which were added once Catherine Riley was born?

The crib, bedding, glider, changing table and curtains were put into place before she was born. I had planned to bring out the pink in the crib skirt with accessories if we had a girl and the blue and green if we had a boy. Our goal was to keep the room soft and sweet either way.

Bringing the Indoors Out

Two floors above the downtown Fayetteville square, Ted and Leslie Belden are settling in for a family movie night. Leslie’s curled up on the sofa with the couple’s five-year-old grandson, Hayden; Ted is relaxing in an upholstered armchair nearby. As the opening credits roll, a quick flick of a switch lights a terra-cotta fire pit nestled into the seating area, and the family catches a glimpse of the sunset through the terrace hedges.

It may be on a roof, and it may be a deck, but to call the Beldens’ recently renovated outdoor living space simply a roof deck would be an understatement. When the couple moved into Fayetteville’s historic Campbell-Bell building 10 years ago, the empty nesters were delighted to trade yard work for the ease of city living. But as their daughters’ young families started to grow, the Beldens knew they needed a more family-oriented retreat.

“What we wanted most dearly was an outdoor space to enjoy with our family,” says Leslie, “a place where our grandkids could go out and spill their juice and ride a tricycle.”

Greening the Garden

When it comes to earth-friendly living, one of the first principles is to stay put. Don’t tear down an existing home and build back bigger, or find a natural habitat and replace it with a large new home.

That’s the concept philanthropists Jim and Nancy Blair employed when they began strategizing ways to include an office at their residence. Having lived in the same house on a tree-filled mountainside in Fayetteville since the 1970s, Jim was predisposed to making the home accommodate his and Nancy’s additional office needs. With a goal of staying put, surrounded by the trees and wildlife he’d come to know over the decades spent on the site, he sought a way to sensitively add a new structure to the current setting.

Thinking green is nothing new to Jim, a major force behind Fayetteville’s Blair Library building, which garnered silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. Jim and Nancy sought the advice of architect Marlon Blackwell, FAIA, who designed a new 1,000-square-foot structure housing the additional spaces the couple needed and tucked it snuggly alongside their current home, minimizing its impact on the property.

At Home in Arkansas: You could have built a new house and made it green. Why did you decide to transform an older home?

Homeowner Chris Ladner: We just love this neighborhood. There’s so much diversity in the style of homes here, and it’s full of mature trees. We’ve lived in three houses in this neighborhood, and with each move, our homes have become progressively smaller. We’ve done the opposite of what most people do.

Homeowner Anne Ladner: And we like the walkability of this neighborhood. We’re close to our two daughters’ schools. I grew up walking to school and riding my bike everywhere, and you can do that here.

At Home in Arkansas: How did the waterfront locale influence the design of your home?

Homeowner Kathryn Miles: As soon as we saw the bluff lot, I envisioned a modern house inspired by our Arkansas surroundings and influenced by the architectural design of Frank Lloyd Wright. I refer to our style as organic modern and my husband, Joe, whimsically calls it contemporary prairie—Frank Lloyd Wright with a twist.

What was your goal for the home’s design?

We wanted to open the home up to its natural surroundings and allow it to blend into the landscape. I wanted guests to enter and immediately be drawn through the home to the terrace where they see nothing but the Ozarks—and they are. Guests don’t even notice the house until they return indoors to sit and visit.

Lakeside Lodge

At Home in Arkansas: Tell us about the background of this Eden Isle home and how the renovation project began.

Designer Heather Chadduck: The house was built in the 1960s by Dallas-based architect David George, who also designed the Red Apple Inn, Eden Isle’s iconic lodge. The house was in need of some major repairs and renovation when my clients, who live in Little Rock, purchased it. The wife is a close childhood friend, and she immediately enlisted my help. One of the first descriptions she gave me was that it’s the kind of place you want your ashes scattered—it’s that peaceful and beautiful.

It seems your clients immediately connected with the site. How did they envision using the house?

The house was intended as a weekend getaway destination for their family, which includes three children. My clients wanted the house to be comfortable, approachable and not too decorated. They envisioned bringing extended family and friends up for long weekends on the lake, which made comfort and durability a must.

Backyard Escape

If you knock on Lisa Nutt’s front door on a warm afternoon, she probably won’t answer. But don’t take it personally. Since redesigning the landscape of her North Little Rock home, Lisa doesn’t spend much time inside the house. You are more likely to find her in the backyard—walking in the shade of her Japanese maples, listening to the calm trickle of the koi pond’s waterfall, or getting her hands dirty in flowerbeds that are thick with ferns, begonias and purple salvia.

“I’m never inside the house anymore,” Lisa says while standing on the flagstone walkway that weaves through her meticulously planned outdoor oasis.

On the grounds of the stately home, tiers of flowerbeds slope downward toward the dock, where the calm waters of the neighborhood lake lap softly against the family’s favorite fishing spot. To Lisa and her husband, David, their roots in this land and home run as deep as the roots of the giant oak trees that canopy the yard. “David’s grandfather lived here,” Lisa says about the home, which was built in 1959. “David grew up fishing on this spot.”
