In Little Rock, designer Kathryn LeMaster helps a homeowner reimagine her cottage kitchen to meet her needs

Just over five years ago, Lynn Baker contacted designer Kathryn LeMaster to help renovate a recently inherited childhood home. However, as life goes, Lynn’s wants and needs changed soon after the project (which was featured in At Home in Arkansas in May 2015) was completed. “The house felt a little too big for me,” Lynn says. “I also got a dog and needed a fenced yard, and I took up pottery as a hobby and really needed a space dedicated to that.” All of these reasons added up to a move less than a mile down the road into a charming 1950s home.

Building a custom home with her husband, Cody, gave Sarah Smith the opportunity to dive headfirst into her passion for design. “I’ve always really appreciated good style and design as a hobby. Creating an elegant, playful, and sweet space was the objective for both designer Chandler Bailey and her client Jessica Koehler when embarking on this nursery design. “She thought she was expecting a little girl, so she would send me inspiration boards that were all pink and flowers,” says Chandler, who had previously worked with Jessica and her husband, David, to refresh other spaces of their home. “Jessica has a traditional, feminine style, so even when she found out they were having a little boy, she felt she could bring in some of her favorite softer elements.”

When Brittany Nixon Brun and her husband, Trey, learned they were expecting a little girl, Brittany immediately began pulling soft fabric swatches and looking for classic pieces that would speak to the couple’s love of traditional design. As the owner of Little Rock’s Brittany Nixon Creative, the designer says she wanted her daughter Anna Claire’s nursery to feel current yet playful and to be grounded with pieces that will stand the test of time. “I always advise my clients to think long-term, and I did the same in this room,” Brittany says. “I am drawn to the ‘let them be little’ mantra, but I was also careful to choose things that could be used or repurposed as she grows,” she says. For example, the changing table easily transitions to a dresser while a pair of étagères hold mementos and stuffed animals but can be filled with books in years to come.

A vacation home in Jasper offers endless opportunities for family fun


Amid the rolling hills and treetops of the Ozarks is one family’s treasured retreat. With a wraparound porch, courtyard dining, rows of rocking chairs, and even a tennis court, it’s a dream home for a family who loves to spend time together outdoors. And while classic architecture makes the house feel as if it’s been a part of the landscape for decades, this picture is only partially true. 

“When the owners first bought this land, there was a roughly 100-year-old farmhouse in this exact location,” says Daniel Keeley, who designed the landscape and outdoor living spaces both here and at a compound on another part of the property. (Its two cozy cabins and their outdoor living areas were previously featured in At Home). With plenty of sleeping quarters at the aforementioned area, this house was intended more as an “entertainment hub.” “They didn’t necessarily need more bedrooms, but having another gathering place like this where they can all be together is really important to them,” Daniel says. “And once they discovered the original farmhouse was beyond repair, they figured they might as well make it everything they wanted it to be.”

Walking into the home of Kim and Brian Biggs feels a little like walking into an art museum. Eye-catching paintings grace nearly every wall; sculptural furniture and accessories take on an artful air; and, of course, bright white walls serve as a backdrop for it all. “I have a lot of artwork, and about 90 percent of it is original, so I wanted it to pop. I wanted it to feel like you were at a gallery,” Kim says. “And because the architecture is so structural, I wanted the contrast to be bold.”

After building two homes of her own, Tish DeLozier finds her passion—and launches a business—in design


Inspired by her native South Carolina, Tish wanted the exterior of the home to mimic a Charleston row house.

“I’m a colorful person,” Tish DeLozier says. Upon entering the home she shares with her husband, Patrick, and their three young children, you get an immediate sense of happy at the first sightings of pink, green, orange, and turquoise. “Turquoise is a favorite of mine, so it’s in every room,” she says with a smile. And while the rainbow of hues might be the first thing to catch your eye, thoughtfully executed details, inviting layouts, and efficient organization don’t go unnoticed as you move through the home the DeLoziers built just two years ago.
