After living in their West Little Rock home for nearly 10 years, Wayne and Clair Alley were ready for a new look in the most-used area of their home—a blended-space living room and kitchen. With two of their four children away at college, the couple knew the updates should be practical, encourage spending time together, and offer plenty of seating for friends and extended family. They turned to Little Rock-based designer Tobi Fairley to create a contemporary retreat. Here’s how she pulled the look together.

We posted the request on our Facebook page: Searching for a foyer in need of a fresh look. Fayetteville homeowner Candace Dixon responded with a few photos, and designer Jennifer Huett, owner of House to Home in Hot Springs, took on the design challenge. “A foyer sets the mood for the entire house,” says Huett. “This space has great elements, like the beautiful front door and the marble floor, which needed emphasizing. I used them as the starting point for the palette in creating a look that’s elegant yet bold with a pop of color.”

The adage that a picture says a thousand words definitely applies to the before-and-after photos of this kitchen. I can see that the layout of the room is the same, but the transformation from dark and traditional to light and modern is dramatic.

Scott Paterek and Rus Venable of Massimo Interiors help Dr. Jake and Cheryl Jaquiss create an open, stylish kitchen and master bath

At Home in Arkansas: This kitchen and bathroom seem so organized and efficient, and those big windows make the areas extra bright. What were the rooms like before you began the renovation?
Scott Paterek of Massimo: The opposite of that! It’s a 1980s house, and the rooms were more formal and closed off.

Roasted autumn vegetables, feta puffs with fresh spinach, and pinwheels with beets, goat cheese and pistachios have become first family favorites at the Arkansas Governor’s Mansion, made all the more delicious because the main ingredients have been grown on-site.
The mansion sits on eight-and-a-half acres in the heart of the historic Quapaw Quarter in Little Rock, and an organic vegetable garden is nestled in the southeastern corner of the property, surrounded by a distinctive picket fence and encircled by flowering crabapple, holly and magnolia trees. The bucolic setting in the heart of the city was created as part of garden designer P. Allen Smith’s overhaul of the mansion grounds in 2005, and over the past few years the 3,600-square-foot plot has produced bountiful harvests under the guidance of the Pulaski County Master Gardener program.

In the Pettaway Park neighborhood in downtown Little Rock, a simple and sleek new home on a corner lot breaks from convention. Although it qualifies as affordable housing, ample windows and a slatted wooden exterior convey high quality materials. While it appears nestled into the lot, mere months ago it was built in a Fayetteville warehouse and trucked to the site. And though the streamlined appearance suggests professional design and construction, the home was created by a group of students from the University of Arkansas Fay Jones School of Architecture.

Boys will be Boys
Vincent, in a white Splendid tee from Tulips, and Fore Axel & Hudson zip-front plaid jacket and Me Too shorts from Bella Jack’s Children’s Boutique in Fayetteville, makes silly faces. Ladylike Jett smiles in a pair of Diesel gladiator sandals, and a Kico Kids cardigan, skirt and yellow eyelet tank, all from 3 Monkeys Children’s Boutique in Rogers. The bench and mirror are vintage; pillows are from Target. Brooklyn climbs on a Louis ghost armchair from Little Rock’s Soho Modern, showing off her ruffly green Splendid dress from Tulips in Little Rock.
