Designer Krista Lewis turns a dated Little Rock bathroom into a sophisticated yet youthful retreat

When Krista Lewis of K. Lewis Interior Design first approached this project, she was faced with a common dilemma found in older bathrooms: The choppy layout made the space feel cramped. It was immediately clear how much light could be gained by taking down a couple of walls. “The toilet, vanity, and even the shower basically stayed in the same spot, but it’s totally opened up,” she says. “We didn’t expand into any more space, we just re-worked what we already had.”

Mara Malcolm updates a Little Rock family’s den to add both comfort and style

When Melody and Judge Chris Piazza asked friend and designer Mara Malcolm to update their home’s family room, she knew it would have to feature elements that catered to the smallest member of the family: the couple’s beloved pug, Pete. “I know how much they love Pete, so when I began designing I put a picture of him on the mood board. He is fawn, gray, and black, and honestly everything just came organically from his coat—and they loved it,” Mara says.

When Vivian Dunnaway’s children called their friend Marie Jeffery, they were looking for the perfect gift. “They said their mom was renovating her home, and I was going to be her Christmas present,” the designer recalls. Marie, who started her design business five years ago after spending 17 years teaching elementary school, was eager to help. “The same nurture aspect that I loved about teaching has carried over into my passion for design,” she says. The two women talked extensively about plans in preparation for the room’s complete overhaul.

In Hot Springs Village, designer Sandy Sutton helps a couple revamp the hub of their lakefront home

Jane and Tom Weiss’s kitchen makeover started with what they thought would be a simple stovetop switch. “From one little conversation, we ended up totally gutting the room and changing its style,” says designer Sandy Sutton of Sandy Sutton’s Design Center. Originally from Jonesboro but having lived all over the world, the Weisses settled in Hot Springs Village to enjoy the community, golf, and, of course, the lake.

Designer Lori Carpenter reinvents her home’s master bath to last for years to come

After living in their Ash Flat home for the past 27 years, designer Lori Carpenter and her husband, Martin, were ready for a few updates—namely in the master bath. While they were planning, a foot surgery opened Lori’s eyes to numerous aspects of the space that might not work for the couple down the road. “I needed a bench in the shower to make it easier to use,” she says, “and we never used our Jacuzzi tub, because it’s difficult to get in and out.”
