Busy days are par for the course for Jay Howard, the young founder and CEO of I.O. Metro, a rapidly growing furniture and accessories store that he started in Bentonville as a “side business” in March 2005. Almost 4 years later, I.O. Metro has 11 stores in six states, including Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Mississippi, with two stores opening in Alabama and one in Dallas in early 2009. “Forty hours is only half of a work week,” Howard says. “I mistook that for a full week at some point!”

A native of Helena, Howard earned his degree in finance and entrepreneurial studies at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, in 2003 and went on to work as a national account manager for Jimco/J. Hunt Import Lighting Company in Jonesboro and Lebanon Seaboard Corporation in Bentonville before opening I.O. Metro. “Initially, I.O. Metro was the answer to a real estate vacancy in a retail center in Bentonville that I co-owned with Helen and Bill Benton, who are also co-owners of I.O. Metro,” he says. “But within six months I decided to focus solely on I.O. Metro as we began expanding to Little Rock.”

At I.O. Metro, Howard created a unique formula, combining stylish, timely products—from furnishings and rugs to lamps and wall décor—with great value and instant gratification, thanks to a huge selection of in-stock furnishings. “We offer cutting-edge looks at a fraction of the retail cost, all while maintaining great quality,” he says. He also set out to make the shopping and buying process simple and easy for the customer, while also giving them a custom, tailored look. Most pieces in the store mix creatively together; any dining chair can be paired with any dining table; any club chair can work with any sofa. The atmosphere in every I.O. Metro store is upbeat and casual. Shoppers feel comfortable browsing alone, yet the sales staff is always ready with assistance or even free design services. “I am constantly told by customers that they go to I.O. Metro if they are having a bad day, because even if they only buy something small or just look around, they always walk out in a better mood,” Howard says.

Of course, for any operation to appear seamless and low-key to its customers, there is a world of organization going on behind the scenes. “Many of my employees have been with me since day one,” Howard says, “and it’s been fun to watch them grow into corporate positions.” Each week, Howard and his furniture and accessory buyers lead the in-house product development team in brainstorming sessions, discussing ideas for new products. Inspiration can come from anywhere: the sales staff, designers they work with, or new trends on the horizon. From there, drawings are sent to one of their factories, which produces a sample for Howard’s review before they choose a date for it to hit sales floors. They’ve worked with factories in India, Indonesia, China and Mexico, but Howard recently moved all the upholstery production to Mississippi to cut freight costs. “It’s been very successful,” he says. “Plus, we’ve created dozens of jobs at a thirty-year-old manufacturing facility that was suffering from the downturn in the economy.”

In fact, learning more about the world and the different regions of the county where I.O. Metro manufactures their products has been an incredibly rewarding part of Howard’s career path, and acquiring new skills in general keeps him on his toes. “I have done it all, from delivering furniture to speaking at a national leadership conference for furniture executives,” he says. Howard looks forward to learning much more as his company grows nationally, and he isn’t afraid to make mistakes. “You only get better from your mistakes,” he says. “Most can be prevented, but you have to let those that can’t roll off your back. I’m a perfectionist, and this was very difficult for me to understand, but since I have, it’s a totally different game.”

The Cast System

The beauty of a work of art or a photograph is only made better by a unique frame, and this collection of Elias Artmetal art cast frames are no exception. Davis Tillman of Tillman Antiques in Hot Springs came across one from this collection in New Orleans years ago, and he spent the better part of a year researching the company, the production techniques and the origins of the casts. Today, Davis is able to work directly with the company to purchase these meticulous crafted frames.

Made in the United States using antique France molds, these frames are cast of pewter and electroplated with real 18-karat gold. “What makes these frames so unique is that they incorporate sterling silver into the pewter,” Tillman says. “It gives the flash-gold look of the late eighteen hundreds, and it’s a sheen and a quality you aren’t going to find elsewhere.”

The original French molds impart all the intricate details and unique forms from the art castings. “There are not many stores that carry these frames, and I just fell in love with them. The high quality of materials and antique detailing make them really stand-out pieces,” Tillman says.

Within each frame, Tillman placed an etching, from a damaged book. “We’ve saved these etchings from water-damaged books and other art collections,” he says. “They would normally have been trashed with the entire piece, but we were able to preserve and frame them. It’s nice to pair the French-inspired frames with images of the same era.” No matter what they are holding, these frames are works of art and would make a wonderful addition to any home or antique collection.

Mediterranean Masterpiece

Missy and John Gibson did not take the task of designing the master bathroom in their new Hot Springs home lightly. In fact, they did a wide array of research over several years before construction began. “We looked at a lot of homes over four or five years, trying to draw ideas from well-designed homes in the state and even out of state,” John says. “We were really inspired by Mediterranean-style houses we saw in Florida, and the look translated well into the bathroom, as well as the rest of the home.”

With a stylistic goal in mind, Missy began gathering tear sheets from magazines to capture the warm and comfortable, yet detailed and elegant, look that she imagined. As a means to that end, the Gibsons also enlisted the help of interior designer Sandy Sutton, of Sandy Sutton’s Interior Spaces in Hot Springs. “Sandy was a guiding force throughout the process.” John says, “She had amazing ideas, and she helped create things that we knew we wanted, like the vanities, which we’d seen in a magazine and wanted to replicate.”

For the elaborate stonework that defines the room, the Gibsons turned to All Natural Stone in Little Rock, where Sam Mousa designed the eye-catching medallion in the center of the floor. “Detailed finishes were key to the whole look,” John says. Crafted of four different types of stone, the Mediterranean-influenced medallion is an ideal contrast the bathroom’s expanse of travertine, and it sets the tone for the entire space. All Natural Stone also helped design the custom shower and the curving tub enclosure, flanked by a pair of stone columns.

On the ceiling, Sutton worked with decorative painters Bonnie and Roscoe to create a detailed motif, but one that wouldn’t get lost in the spacious room. The delicate scrolling design, reminiscent of Italian frescoes, serves to highlight the vaulted arch above the oversized tub—a great spot to watch television and relax in the evenings. They also created a custom ceiling medallion to spotlight the ornate chandelier, while also calling to mind the complementary floor medallion.

For Missy and John, this bathroom retreat is the ideal fusion of comfort, function and style. “We definitely wanted it to be distinctive,” says John, “but it’s also a really warm, cozy retreat for the two of us to relax in the morning or the evening.”

A Welcoming Sign

Little Rock resident Wilma Graham found herself lucky enough to have an in-house designer. Her son, Rick Qualls, offers a wide variety of design expertise from his theatrical travels to New York, Germany and Tokyo, and his stints working with Martha Stewart as a floral designer and at Sotheby’s auction house. With all these inspirations, he set about decorating Wilma’s house inside and out for the holidays, including handcrafting each and every wreath. He suggests that live greenery can last all season if it’s outside in the cool weather, although, he usually replaces indoor live greenery before a party or right before Christmas to ensure that it’s fresh.

To make the wreaths, Rick uses chicken wire on a sturdy metal frame and wraps it with fresh greenery. A tip he learned while under Martha Stewart’s tutelage is to split the stems and soak them overnight in Aspirin water to help preserve the greenery longer.

“I think it’s important to keep the outside of the house, especially the entryway around the door, welcoming and inviting,” Rick says. “It should give you a taste of something special and make you want to come in and see what’s behind the door.”
