A downtown Little Rock Victorian-era kitchen finds new life with a colorful makeover that suits its owners while honoring its past

What Anna Lewis wanted in community and walkability, her husband, Zack, desired in space and land. The compromise? A historic downtown Little Rock home that sits on nearly an acre of land but is in close proximity to restaurants, coffee shops, and the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts. Drawn to historic homes, Anna saw an opportunity in the 1898 Queen Anne Victorian abode, which has gone through numerous transformations—from the single family dwelling it was built as to a law office with for-rent apartments upstairs. What’s more, she knew they could make it fit their family with room-by-room updates. “My husband is very handy—that’s the only way we could live here, because the house needed some love,” she says. “We live in a lot of imperfection, but I like to think there’s beauty in imperfection,” she adds. “It feels like the house has more soul.”…

Little Rock collector Rachel Jones invites us into her charming bungalow that overflows with history and intrigue at every corner

Our house is always changing,” says Rachel Jones of the 1915 Stift Station bungalow she shares with her husband, Jordan Wimpy. The ongoing evolution is fueled by her fascination with vintage and antique wares. Large and small, intricately handmade or mass-produced, she has become a keeper of found objects and her home is much like a gallery. “Nothing is perfect because everything is old,” Rachel says, adding that paint loss and decay are part of the story. “I’m not perfect and neither are these items, but I love everything here and have selected it with care. I really think about what I bring into our home—and, of course, space and budget are always issues.”

Gone Fishing

Tommy Holmes has been fishing since his teenage years, so it’s no surprise he was drawn to pick up a vintage fishing lure—to be exact, a “380 Yellow Shore Tiny Punkinseed” made by Heddon Bait Co.—thirty years ago on an antique hunt with his wife. Now, as a member of the Arkansas Tackle Collectors, Holmes fishes regularly at Greer’s Ferry Lake and meets with the other club members once a month over breakfast at Ed & Kay’s Restaurant in Benton.

In fact, get-togethers with the other club members are one of the ways Holmes acquires new pieces. They trade amongst themselves and travel to shows across the United States, including the national event, which Holmes calls “a three-day fishing lure bonanza.” At these shows, he looks for three qualities in the lures: condition, rarity and age. The more rare, older collector items are known as “new in the box,” which means they have little wear-and-tear and often accompany their original packaging.

In a fast-paced world with electric juicers and frozen concentrates, old-fashioned reamers are no longer needed to enjoy the tangy juices of oranges, lemons and limes. But they make a charming collection—not to mention a whimsical addition to any kitchen. “What I love about reamers,” says Neil Palmer of Crystal Hill Antique Mall in North Little Rock, “is that they have a utility, but they’re also beautiful.”

Reamers burst onto the scene after the Civil War, when it was discovered that citrus cures scurvy. That set the ball rolling for a slew of styles, beginning with simple hand held versions. Two-piece sets with measuring pitcher bottoms and separate reamer tops emerged in the 1920s. Other styles include saucer reamers, which are one-piece versions shaped like a disc, figural reamers and juice sets with matching cups.
