It’s been awhile since we shared a book review on the At Home blog, and in honor of the adorable Northwest Arkansas “she shed” gracing the cover of our March 2019 issue, we’re sharing Erika Kotite’s most recent read, She Sheds Style: Make Your Space Your Own.

Kotite is a true she shed enthusiast. She’s co-founder of the website She Sheds Living, and this is her second book—a follow-up to She Sheds: A Room of Your Own. Often considered the feminine response to the “man cave” trend, Kotite says that a she shed is any retreat in a cute little outbuilding—it doesn’t necessarily have to act as a gardening hub, either. Some of the examples in She Sheds Style explore structures that are home offices or even cozy rooms for entertaining. The important part, she maintains, is that it’s a space for you.
In this book, Kotite approaches the design of a she shed much like you would the design of a house: starting with the style and architecture, moving to color palette, then tackling interiors, doors and windows, and decorative details.

Each chapter offers tips, how-tos, and inspiration for that particular step in the process. One of my favorites is a step-by-step instruction on how to lay brick in a herringbone pattern for a more visually interesting floor.
Many of the ideas in this book could also be applied to your main living spaces, as well; there are sections on designing for a small space and understanding scale that offer solutions to challenges people encounter in all types of homes.
While a variety of materials (including neon!) are used in the projects throughout She Sheds Style, fans of farmhouse, vintage, and shabby chic styles will definitely love the rooms featured here. Many tend toward country charm, while there are a couple of more modern takes sprinkled throughout.
If you’re looking to upgrade an existing shed, build one, or just love to see the creative ways other people use small spaces, pick up a copy of She Sheds Style and get inspired.
