modern cooking
This kitchen by designer Meridith Hamilton of MLH Designs feels every bit as open, clean and spacious as it looks in this shot. By the time I leave a photo shoot, I’ve usually spent the better part of a day in a space and have some inkling what it would be like to live there. This kitchen had me ready to cook. Stir fry, specifically. All that pristine counter space to spread out broccoli, carrots, onion, chicken, ginger. A wok pan to put on that elegant cooktop, with the sleek hood to fan away the heat.
It would be a breeze to wash up the veggies in this sink.
And I could easily access the food processor to chop up all the produce.
For the full story on how Meridith transformed this kitchen, and a listing of the resources she used, visit here. And if you’re hankering for stir fry now, here’s one of my go-to quick and easy recipes.
weekend DIYs, delicious dining room, serene bath
From editor in chief Diane Carroll: “This room has all my favorites–books, lots and lots of books, a dose of pink, sculptural Saarinen chairs, and even peonies. I’m ready to be invited to dinner.” (“Style idol: Minnie Mortimer” from Elements of Style)
From assistant art director Laura LaRue: “If this doesn’t brighten your Friday, I don’t know what will! My gray door, which I love, is a bit jealous. 🙂 Might have to bring a little sunshine to my porch too!” (“Old yeller” from Young House Love)
From associate editor/online editor Paulette Pearson: “Pretty sure this space would alleviate my dread of getting ready (drying hair, makeup, etc.) in the morning. Been dreaming of creating a bathroom and dressing room I can enjoy. This one is beautiful.” (“Gray and glamorous” from Shelter)
From account executive Stevi Jackson: “I love a good bold wallpaper â great examples of how to incorporate a graphic element into any room!” (“Add depth and interest with a feature wall” from Shayla Copas Interiors)
From marketing coordinator Megan Lindsey: “I was browsing Pinterest for some fun weekend DIY projects and stumbled upon this one. Vintage monogrammed frames. Super simple, and a great way to jazz up a wall in your bedroom or office! Get creative this weekend! Happy Friday, everyone!” (“Custom made vintage frames with letters” from Etsy)
creative and color curated style for kids
pin hook // cradle // forever young // chair // goldilocks // beatles // rug // playhouse // cascade mobile
At Home’s Family Homes issue is one of my favorites. Pretty sure it’s because I get to meet some awesome kids and play (I mean style) in their rooms. It’s always a good day when you come across fun, inspiring kids that are so proud of their rooms. So for this installation of “Creative and Color Curated,” IÂ channelled my inner child (which wasn’t very hard) and found some super cool pieces–from the chair, which by the way is only $65 and eco friendly, to the golidlocks mirror that any kid (or adult) is going to enjoy years to come. Whether you are 6 mos. or 60 years old…be sure to add a little whimsy. It’s sure to bring a giggle every now and then.
illustrating {spinning tops} with hannah alexander
At Home’s incredibly talented guest illustrator, Hannah Alexander, took a liking to the collection of children’s spinning tops featured in our Family Homes issue. Really, no words can describe how much we love this illustration. Wouldn’t it be beautiful framed and hung in a nursery or toddler’s room?
Psst… if you like Hannah’s work, check out her blog and web site!
At Home in Arkansas was extra exciting to me this month because I love children’s rooms! Decorating my children’s rooms has actually been one of the highlights of parenting for me. Because of this love for kids’ decor, I have in recent years been interested in creating prints for children. The segment on vintage spinning tops in this month’s issue of At Home was the perfect inspiration. What a fun decorating motif!

happy house, modern with a rustic touch, messy offices
From assistant art director Laura LaRue: “I love everything about this living room, but especially the exposed brick walls” (“An old renovated Spanish farmhouse” from The Style Files)
From marketing coordinator Megan Lindsey: “I absolutely love the rustic yet clean look of this space. I’m also a huge fan of using white and wood features, with a bright color that complements the look of the room. Love the yellow and the individual wooden tables instead of a coffee table! And the little yellow stools give it a modern and playful touch. What a great color scheme and look for any room of your home. Happy Friday everyone!” (“Interior inspiration, fabulous rooms & decor!” from ZsaZsa Bellagio)
From editor in chief Diane Carroll: “Isn’t this the ultimate happy house? I always love how pops of color look against a white backdrop, and this place does that so well. My new favorite kitchen…and living room…and dining area…” (“Mona Ross Berman” from House of Turquoise)
From associate editor/online editor Paulette Pearson: “This image of Jenna Lyons’ office reminds me that messy offices are creative offices! The more magazine tears, photos and books you have lying around the more likely you’ll spark a great idea.” (“Design Darling on Tumblr” from Design Darling)
in the pink
Today’s Room of the Week has us in the pink…loving these pink peonies and the pop of color against all the luscious chocolate in this dining room.
As a mom of three young sons, Jamie Stewart may know brown wears well…but she also knows how to punch up a room with a pop of pretty color (including those Trina Turk pillows!). Read more about this colorful, family-friendly house here, and see another pink space we’re loving here.

wardrobe makeover with tulip louise: nerd alert!
Take a step in the right direction with this selection of loafers curated by Anna of Tulip Louise! It’s a hot new trend that we love (comfort is key!), but the number of options out there can be daunting. Do I want colorful? Classic? Leather? Suede? Anna makes it easy by offering her favorites, and also suggestions for how to style them.
Which one will you choose?
Iâm having a major crush on loafers, which happen to be the perfect transitional shoe to carry us from summer to fall! Once I score a set of my very own, I plan to pair them with a classic jean, t-shirt, oversized blazer and bangles for a relaxed {yet pulled together} look. Who knows, I may even throw in some peepers for good measure! I did the dirty work and scoped out what I believe to be the cutest loafers on the market right now:
1. Matiko âLiloâ in Black– $66
2. Steve Madden âMadeeâ in Leopard– $120
3. Todâs Loafer in Fuchsia– $469
4. Matiko âLiloâ in White– $119
5. Senso âEstaâ in Stripe Pony– $170
6. Steve Madden âMadeeâ in Black– $120
Do you have a favorite? Mine has to be #5!
