illustrating (green) interiors with hannah alexander
Wow. To say that we are fortunate to call illustrator Hannah Alexander a member of the At Home in Arkansas blog team would be an understatement. Hannah illustrated her little heart out for you this month! Here, her marvelous interpretation of a series of rooms featured in Lonny magazine–all tied together by the color green.
Get to know Hannah better and check out her adorable blog, Sundry Mumsy!
This month’s illustration is a quick rendering of my favorite use of green that I came across in Lonny magazine. I love the green curtains in contrast with the dark walls and muted browns. I think that green curtains are so unexpected in this room, and I love the use of unexpected.

Cabana heaven and pool paradise
How’s this for a charming cabana? After recently spending a wonderful afternoon napping and reading in one, I had to make it my room of the week.
I recently took a week off for an annual girls’ trip with my daughter and friends, and while I love any kind of R&R, especially with beaches and blue water, I most love some down time that involves a little design eye-candy. We followed the highway path that many an Arkansan takes down to the Florida panhandle, and stayed in Rosemary Beach on the scenic stretch of highway known as 30A. And while visiting a friend in Alys Beach, we had a chance to enjoy a beautiful day at the Caliza pool.
The communities of Alys and Rosemary Beach were designed by the New Urbanist architecture firm Duany Plater-Zyberk—the same folks working on The Village at Hendrix, right here in our state. And the beautifully tranquil Caliza pool is a community within itself–a series of pools, a restaurant and lounge, relaxation places…and those glorious cabanas.
If you’re interested in soaking in the sites at Alys Beach, peruse the weekend getaways and workshops at Studio B at the Beach, a great way to explore your creativity surrounded by good design. And if you’d like to see a few more sites in the area, hop on over to the New England Home blog, where I’m guest blogging.
friday favorites: Hamptons showhouse, outdoor living room, perfect porch
From editor in chief Diane Carroll: “This tranquil bathroom (from Brady Design) in a previous designer showhouse in the Hamptons caught my eye, since we’re finishing up our Kitchen & Bath issue for September. We’re featuring a Tobi Fairley project in the issue, and Tobi was selected as a designer for the next Hamptons showhouse…can’t wait to see what she comes up with.” (“History of the Hampton Designer Showhouse with Austin Handler” from Tobi’s Blog)
From marketing coordinator Megan Lindsey: “I would be perfectly content if I could spend my entire weekend on this patio. I love how simple and cozy it looks. I’m especially loving the black and white stripes and the balcony, which has French doors that lead into the master bedroom. Gorgeous! Now, to find a patio exactly like this that I can take over this weekend! Happy Friday!” (“An outdoor living room” from Zsa Zsa Bellagio)
From account executive Stevi Jackson: “Love the blue/green porch! Donât think Iâd ever want to leave the swing if it were at my house.”(“More decorating tips for your porch or patio” from Ken Rash’s Arkansas)
From associate editor/online editor Paulette Pearson: “Lately I’ve had an insatiable desire to travel someplace far away and exotic. The Cap Estel in the French Riviera would be a lovely destination, indeed.” (“Dream destination: Cap Estel” from Life in a Venti Cup)
currently loving: vintage jewelry by bella vita
If you’ve read our July issue, you know it’s all about living green. That includes the choices you make for your wardrobe as well. Instead of buying new, why not find vintage and antique pieces made by local designers?
The very talented Brandy Thomason of Bella Vita Jewelry (click here to see more beautiful designs!) created these jewelry sets using vintage Sarah Conventry brooches and clip on earrings turned into pierced ear earrings. Aren’t they perfect for summer?

Brandy used odd and end pieces to create a ring and a set of earrings in white.
And her skeleton key necklaces (we love these!) are made from antique keys and vintage chains.
Help the earth with fabulous jewelry? Not a bad deal. Plus, since they’re each handmade, you can be rest assured that nobody else will have the same piece. Thank you, Bella Vita!

chris olsen designs with summertime watermelons
Now you can have your melon and eat it too! Our resident garden expert, Chris Olsen of Botanica Gardens, shows you how to use the summertime favorite in your exterior decor. Just one more reason to throw a party!
For other decorating ideas from Chris, click here and here.
When I think of summer, I imagine a tasty cold slice of watermelon. Watermelons are ready for the picking in summer, and they are not just for eating. Why not decorate with them???
Create that perfect centerpiece for your next summertime function. All you have to do is slice your melon into two halves. Then divide that half into two more halves. Take each of the quarter slices and remove about 8 inches of meat from the center. Then slip in place of the missing melon flesh, a pre-moistened piece of floral oasis foam. Now you have the perfect base for a summer arrangement. Just use flowers like colorful zinnias right from the garden, blue thistle, vibrant mums, and even fresh foliage. This arrangement should last for about 4 or 5 days.
Hereâs another idea for you!!! Take an assortment of color watermelons and tuck them around your potted containers and even in the garden as you would pumpkins in the fall time. Create groupings of two or more melons. They will last for only about 2-3 weeks outdoors before turning to mush. Watermelons can become that perfect summertime accessory for your patio, deck, or landscape.
