room of the week: responsible revival

What wonderful inspiration for this lovely Thanksgiving day! We hope you are all gathered together with family and friends, perhaps relaxing on your own cozy screened in porch with a warm fire as the backdrop. Contractor Bill Parkinson of Parkinson Building Group and designers Mona Thompson and Talena Ray, who co-own Providence Design, worked together to create what Thompson calls the “decorated, but undecorated look,” the homeowners wanted to achieve. Happy Thanksgiving!
Kitchen Remodel
Over the past month, the fiancé and I have thrown ourselves headfirst into a kitchen remodel. Correction. We have thrown ourselves headfirst into living through a kitchen remodel. Any homeowner with even the slightest sliver of remodeling experience will tell you that “undertaking” and “living through” a kitchen remodel are two totally different animals.
At the end of November, we are now officially halfway through our dream of turning this kitchen…
into this kitchen…
The past month has made us more than a just a little thankful for our must-have list of survival tools for making it out of a kitchen overhaul alive.
#1. The Crockpot
All hail the most ingenious kitchen appliance that doesn’t actually require a kitchen. We’ve dished up quite a few dinners along side the bathtub with this friend’s assistance. When you can’t stand one more bite of take-out, in swoops the Crockpot to save your grumbling belly and your sanity.
#2. Disposable Dishware
I can already feel the tree huggers out there starting to sharpen their reusable knives to throw at me for this endorsement, but without a functioning dishwasher, a tired-working-gal-living-through-a-kitchen-reno has got to do what a tired-working-gal-living-through-a-kitchen-reno has got to do. Good news is that there are plenty of ecofriendly versions available to make you feel a little less guilty.
#3. Pinterest Boards
When you are swimming in sawdust and are 99% positive you will throw yourself onto a pile of rusty nails if you have to live through one more day of this nonsense, stop. Take a deep breath (as you pour an oversized glass of wine) and pull up the Pinterest boards that remind you of why you hopped on this crazy train in the first place. There is light at the end of the tunnel and you have the fastest growing social media platform to prove it.

A South Arkansas farm hosts friends, family and duck hunters alike, especially during this time of year. The McEntire Place Plantation, the weekend retreat of Margaret and Jay McEntire, was purchased 20 years ago. After adding on to the property over the years, they can now sleep 24 comfortably. Jay McEntire is known for rescuing barn wood and salvaging other materials around the area to use on the property. These salvaged galvanized tin walls surround one of the guest house’s three bedrooms, while vintage plantation-style shutters create a natural headboard. Read all about this historic private retreat on the At Home in Arkansas website or in the November Best of Southern Style issue, on newsstands.

The design scheme of this great room evolved from a single accent pillow, seen at the far right in the cream-colored armchair. Made from a fabric found locally at Cynthia East, the pillow includes earthy tones such as rusty reds, woodsy browns, and vibrant turquoises-which carry throughout the room. To find out more details of this great room, read the full story in the November issue or online here.

room of the week: cabinet of curiosities

Cold nights are here and this cozy living room’s roaring fire is so inviting. A collector of found objects and lifelong preservationist, Bill Tarkington sacrificed square footage for this cottage’s irresistible charm and unique floor plan. A former visual merchandiser for Ralph Lauren, Tarkington draws from his professional history to blend otherwise contrasting motifs and uses pattern-on-pattern so skillfully. This historic cottage is full of natural elements and collections he’s acquired over the years. See more of this “cabinet of curiosities” on the At Home in Arkansas website or in the November Best of Southern Style issue, on newsstands.
