room of the week : down to earth

Oly Studio Chandelier | Payton Print by Michelle Armas | Louis XVI Dining Chair | Zinc Door White Buffet
When a young family approached designer Melissa Haynes to give their home a green makeover, Melissa was delighted to find that eco options abound when it comes to home design. She was able to create a gorgeous green space without sacrificing an ounce of her signature style. The natural grasscloth wallpaper was applied with no-VOC adhesive, and the dining chairs were recovered with durable vinyl rather than leather. We adore everything about this dining room!

The Number Game with Chris Olsen

Once your landscape design and planting reach the street, a simple house number stenciled on the curb might get obscured by all that happy greenery. Enable your guests to find your house, plus create your own numbering system with staked and planted terra cottas pots. It’s especially easy if your street address is one digit, but if it’s as many as five, you can just add another, smaller pot to the top of your pyramid. Make your stack sturdy by placing plants close to pot rims, so they can trail easily, and not interfere with the pot above.

Supplies:
3 clay pots in graduated sizes
Green spray paint
Oil based stain
Acrylic paint for number
Painters tape
Paper towels
Brushes
Here’s how:
1. Paint pots green, and allow to dry.
2. Tape off large square(s) on pot(s) for house number(s).
3. Brush stain on pots avoiding number area. Blot with paper towel for mottled effect. Allow to dry.

4. Paint stripes along taped edges of pot(s) to feature number(s).

5. Remove tape and paint number(s).

6. Fill pots with soil, stack, and plant around edges of pots.

Enjoy,
Chris Olsen

Trends at the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show
The Kitchen and Bath Industry Show, or KBIS, is one of the largest trade shows in the nation. Held yearly in conjunction with the National Kitchen and Bath Association conference, it is an inspiring, interactive platform that showcases the latest industry products, trends and technologies.
As a member of this industry, I look forward to this show every year! I adore looking through all of the inspiring designs, old and new. Here are my top ten favorite new products and designs that were introduced a few months ago at this year’s show held in New Orleans.
Bold Furniture Updates
The easiest way to give dated furniture a major boost is with a can of paint, and while I love a soothing pale paint with a distressed finish, it’s summertime and I’m feeling a little more spicy than rustic pastels. Today, my inspiration pics today are all about making bright, bold statements with painted furniture.
This precious grouping of painted beauties can be purchased from Maine Cottage, but I see no reason why a paintbrush and a free Saturday can’t turn a few thrift store finds into the perfect dining set. Bright, cheery and oh so simple.
Who’s up for a pop of pink? My hand is raised sky high. Check out this fun and flirty hot pink dresser paired with bright yellow duvet.
And who says you have to cover every inch of wood? The volume was turned way up for this dresser when a few stripes came onto the scene.
More of a neutral lover? Take the lead from this serene resting spot with a pair of poster beds decked out in a yellow finish. I’ll take them both.
And, finally, nothing screams summer quite like pineapple. Need I say more?
