Well, I guess my hopes for nice, mild spring weather were a bit premature! The cold, rainy weather I lamented last month simply changed into violent storms with even more rain and, unfortunately, destruction. My house and I have been fortunate enough to avoid harm, but my heart goes out to all the victims of the recent tornadoes.
Because of all the bad weather, we have not made much progress on the exterior of the house. Inside, however, things are getting to a point where you can almost imagine someone living here! Electrical, plumbing and painting work are basically finished.

And the wood floors have been refinished and sealed.

Looking from the main living room into the den, you can see how dramatic the barn wood accent wall is.

Same goes for the tile wall in the bathroom shower. I love how the light bounces off the dimensional tile to create shadows and highlights. Here, we are just waiting for the floor-to-ceiling glass shower wall and the mirror that covers the wall above the vanity.

In the kitchen, we still haven’t gotten as many appliances installed as I would have liked.

But the rest of the granite counters and backsplash are in.

And details like the built-in wine rack above the doorway and the bar area are taking shape.

Elsewhere, other details are going in nicely, too, such as the built-in shelves inside the laundry closet. Switching from the old hot water tank to a new, tankless unit freed up a lot of useful space!

So, there you have it. Plenty of transformations just in time for spring. Check back next month to see if we can beat the heat and get the new A/C unit installed (among other things!).

So many homes have what I call “dead spaces” inside and (in this case) outside. Exterior “dead spaces” are wasted outdoor areas that have no design element and therefore no function. These spaces are forgotten and their endless possibilities are often never utilized. At the 2013 Arkansas Symphony Orchestra Designer House, I found such a space. Hidden in the corner of the back yard this “dead space” was brought back to life with the simple addition of a custom designed and built wooded structure.

Only 17 feet by 15 feet, this concrete hardscape was destined to have the perfect structure built for it. I designed a contemporary pergola with a suspended table surrounded by cotton white modern chairs. When possible, don’t be afraid to mix modern elements with a traditional home. The unexpected is what I strove was my goal and in the end it’s what we so happily got.

The table itself is all wood and is built with a single piece of marine board. Water proof and tough, this table will last for years to come.

To create a more intimate outdoor room, on one side of the patio, a long planter box constructed with treated lumber stands alone. Planted with six foot tall Emerald Green arborvitaes accompanied with lavender geraniums and variegated Algerian ivy, a harsh hardscape has now become a perfect oasis of greenery and flowers.

The pine wood pergola was constructed with all treated lumber and each level was stained with various shades of the same color stain. This gave depth and visual impact. The piece de’ resistenance is the long planter in the the middle of the table.

Fully planted with winter hardy sedums and tender echiveras, the table top arrangement is a sea of greens and grey hues and undertones. Low maintenance, heat tolerant and minimal watering required makes this the perfect planter for a non-gardener.
No more excuses everyone, any outdoor space can become the ideal destination for friends and family to “just hang around.” Build it and they will come!

By the end of May, we are moving full speed ahead towards summer. Summers filled with cold drinks, fireflies—or lightening bugs as I prefer to call them—and tons of time spent outdoors. Before the temps get too steamy, the boyfriend and I have big plans to whip our backyard space into shape with a full scale patio DIY ahead of us in the coming weeks. Naturally, I’ve been scouring all edges of the internet for outdoor inspiration. Along the way, I encountered some killer before & after projects. Let’s visit a few of my favorites.
First up, get a load of this patio/raised flower bed/outdoor fireplace slice of heaven. Hubba, hubba.
DIY raised flowerbeds are a part of the master plan for my soon-to-be-transformed backyard, so these were surely a sight for sore eyes.
Our next backyard could be worse (the hot tub and lush lawn definitely give it a boost), but let’s be honest. It’s still pretty boring.
Amped up with a new pergola, entertaining areas and landscaping galore, this backyard is transformed into a true retreat.
Last but not least, this DIY-er was craving a relaxing spot to kick up her heels just steps from her backdoor.
Her fabulous dark wood pergola with cream curtain panels and expanded patio is just so stinkin’ perfect.
Check back in with me next month and I dish the ins & outs of our very own backyard rehab on At Home’s blog. Until then, happy DIY-ing!

Warm weather is here, which means so are all the local farmer’s markets! I know, you are all thinking: “But I already grow all of my own food…”
Farmer’s markets are more than just fresh produce, however. I’m fortunate enough to live near the Hillcrest Farmer’s Market which boasts of not only perfect produce, but also grass-fed meats, baked good, jellies and jams, plants and flowers, and even local art.
I’d like to indroduce Ellyse Frazier, one of the market’s talented artists. She works in pen and ink, watercolor, and (most recently) cement pottery.
LL: How did you get started selling your art at the farmer’s market?
EF: I began at the Farmers Market helping my brother Ethan sell his heirloom plants (ethansheirloomgardens.
Recently I have been designing and sculpting hand-made pots made of natural materials mixed with cement to showcase Ethan’s heirloom plants. The pots resemble stone but are light weight creating a nice English Country charm.
LL: Can you share some of your favorite pieces with us?
EF: English County inspired cottage:
A lighthouse from an old picture found at my grandparents house:

Decorative garden bucket perfect for any flowers and a collection of herb planters:

LL: Why should people spend Saturday mornings at the market?
EF: It has a fun and energetic vibe and a wonderful laid-back atmosphere, which makes it a great social gathering place.
You can read more about Ellyse’s projects at ellysesstudioarts.blogsopt.com. And next time you’re in need of a gift, think of your local market first. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to see what you find, and who you’ll meet, when you think outside the box [store].
