Mona and Dick Phelan’s outdoor living area is an ideal destination for two people or 20 any time of year
When Mona and Dick Phelan built their west Little Rock home in 2023, the outdoor living area was anything but an afterthought. “In my last house, I had a screened porch that was my favorite spot,” says Mona, the former owner of Providence Design. “When we started drawing this house, it was a have-to-have piece.” However, finding the perfect location within the plan proved to be a challenge. Her previous home’s dining room opened to the porch, a scenario that was not on the table in the new configuration. The Phelans brainstormed options with their builder, Bill Parkinson, who suggested placing the area just off the working pantry. “At first, I thought that might be weird, but it makes so much sense. We can come in and out easily and have access to the wine cooler and snacks,” Mona says.

Mark your calendars and secure your tickets for some of the best the state has to offer in visual arts, music, theater, and more

Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts (arkmfa.org) in Little Rock celebrates the opening of two new exhibitions in October. “Architects of Being” (Oct. 3 – Jan. 11) pairs the works of immigrant artists Louise Nevelson and Esphyr Slobodkina. Both were considered trailblazers of their time, setting out to become artists at the start of the Great Depression with influences of cubism, surrealism, and constructivism. Works include sculptures, mixed media reliefs, collages, paintings, jewelry, and clothing on display in the Harriet and Warren Stephens Family Gallery. “Uncommon Threads in Contemporary Art” (Oct. 25 – April 29) showcases works by artists who sew or otherwise incorporate fibers into their art, highlighting the overlap between fine art and traditional craft. Explore the exhibition in the Berta and John Baird Gallery.

In a cookbook based on her family’s most-treasured dishes, Terry Jones imparts time-honored recipes for everyone to try
Creative endeavors have always been a pinnacle of Terry Jones’s life. A passion for singing that began in second grade ultimately led her to a 31-year career with popular contemporary Christian group Point of Grace. Since that time, she has organized a children’s choir, tried her hand at oil painting, and started a custom cookie making business (known as Mix ’Em Up Cookies) that is still going strong. However, her greatest undertaking has been raising her three children, Cole, Luke, and Mallory, with her husband, Chris. “I ‘got by’ with food when I was touring with Point of Grace,” Terry says. “As our kids started to grow, I realized I needed to fuel them well,” she says. Going back to her creative roots, she began to make healthful, delicious meals that could feed the family. “It had to be beautiful, and I had to enjoy making it,” she says. “At this stage of life, we are launching them into the world, and we are truly empty nesters,” Terry says.

A Fayetteville home’s outdoor spaces receive updates that are equally classic and poised for family fun
For landscape designer Daniel Keeley, the feeling that this project was a progression of previous work was twofold: First, he’s designed almost half a dozen properties with these clients, making them dear friends at this point. Second, he also worked on this house, located in one of Fayetteville’s historic districts, with its former owners. “We did a big exterior project with the previous clients that established the pavilion and the pool,” he says. “When these clients moved in, they wanted to make it their own.”

The northwest corner of The Natural State is a bastion of creativity and culture
Fayetteville’s Brian Crowne has a certain film to thank for launching his lifelong pursuit of music: The Blues Brothers. “I saw that movie and fell in love with the blues, R&B, and soul music. It just resonated with me,” he says. He borrowed a saxophone from a friend, taught himself how to play, and eventually joined the jazz program at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith before forming a band of his own and working as a touring musician for more than two decades.
