“Containers are my heartbeat,” says Laurie Miller, who, along with Tabietha Dillard, co-owns the outdoor accessory line Gloriette. “They give so much dimension to a typical bed and offer a place where you can be a bit more whimsical.” As proprietors of the Arkansas-based online shop, the two love to dream up different plantings and imagine how their customers might bring them to life. “Our belief at Gloriette is whether humble or lush, our gardens are a retreat from a hectic world. They should welcome friends, celebrate life’s milestones, and help us to make cherished memories,” Laurie adds.

Inside a historic building in downtown Little Rock’s South Main Street district, paint peels off the exposed brick walls, and the vaulted ceilings echo with the surrounding buzz of construction. This summer, the one-time laundry facility at 1501 S. Main St. will take new form as the first stationary location of The Bagel Shop—Myles Roberson and Trevor Papsadora’s popular bagel pop-up.

If you build it, they will come: That’s the lesson learned from Richard Mason’s work in downtown El Dorado over the past 50 years. He and his wife, Vertis, both natives of South Arkansas, inadvertently became some of the city’s biggest advocates in the 1980s when they began buying and remodeling old buildings. An exploration geologist by profession, Richard decided to locate the office for his company in the area’s once-bustling square. “When we moved back, it was dead as a doornail. I bet there wasn’t 15 percent occupancy in the stores around the courthouse,” he recalls. “We bought a few more buildings and remodeled them, and then when they leased up really quickly, we bought some more. We ended up with about 15 buildings. We had no intention of doing it. It was just kind of one of those things you get carried away with,” he says with a laugh.

When Marquis Brown was young he was intimidated by the kitchen, often viewing it as the domain of his mother and grandmother. “The kitchen just had such a female-dominated presence in our family,” he says. But that hesitance didn’t last forever. The 30-year-old (who’s an architect by trade) eventually taught himself how to cook, starting with breakfast foods and making meals for friends and family. “I love food so I figured, why not learn how to make it?” he says. “Seeing my mom and grandmother prepare food was an inspiration. They were feeding their family and there’s a lot of gratitude that comes from that.”

Hannah Huddleston and her husband, Frederic, moved to Northwest Arkansas in 2021 with future retirement in mind. So far, it feels as though she was meant for life in the Ozarks. “I had chickens in San Diego; I always felt a little like a misplaced farm girl,” she says with a laugh. The pair looked all over—including in Texas, Arizona, and other parts of the Natural State—before finding the 17-acre plot of land they now call home in Berryville. “In San Diego, our yard was so small, you could be outside and touch your house and your neighbor’s fence,” she says. “Now we live on a river and have this beautiful view and quiet space. It’s what we’ve always wanted.”
