Long gone are the days of downtowns sitting dormant and forgotten, and Little Rock’s is no exception. One of the earliest efforts to revitalize the district began more than 25 years ago with the opening of the River Market. Since then, initiatives to bring people back downtown have extended slowly south and eastward, jumping what before seemed like the impassable borders of Interstates 30 and 630. People are visiting—and moving to—neighborhoods such as South Main Street and the Quapaw Quarter, Pettaway Park, and East Village in droves thanks to new opportunities and thoughtful planning in the city’s most historic communities.

Jennifer Maune honors her grandmother with a recipe for a Christmas classic


If you don’t recognize the name Jennifer Maune, chances are you will soon. In September, the lifestyle blogger from Little Rock became one of three finalists on Season 13 of MasterChef, Fox’s popular cooking competition hosted by Gordon Ramsay. Besides creating recipes and other inspiring content for her website, Jennifer is hard at work developing concepts for a future restaurant and forthcoming cookbook. But this busy creative is used to juggling plates, and she’s thrilled to share her passion with the world. “I love to gather people around the table,” Jennifer says. “It’s where milestones are celebrated, memories are made, and holidays are spent with loved ones. I count it as an honor to be a part of people’s celebrations when they’re making my recipes.”

Though Jennifer has pastry and culinary degrees from the School of Culinary Arts and Hospitality at the University of Arkansas Pulaski Tech and an advanced pastry certification from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, Jennifer counts her grandmother as her most influential teacher. “We would cook and bake together, and I wanted to have a big family because of her,” she says, recalling Christmas celebrations with 40 or more relatives filling the house. That’s where Jennifer learned to embrace the beautiful chaos of hosting holiday get-togethers, such as cookie swaps and gingerbread-decorating parties. “Christmas is for sure my favorite holiday—the decorating, the food, the faith, and spending those precious moments with my family,” she says.

Walk down the wooded pathway to Charlie Gropetti and Todd Smith’s backyard escape and you’ll likely feel as though you are miles into an Arkansas forest. “The idea was to feel far out but not actually be far from the house,” Charlie says. As the owners and creative minds behind national home décor brand Porch View Home, busy schedules often leave them with little time for lengthy vacations, making this at-home retreat even more alluring. The dense thicket consists of a circle of plantings on their property outside Vilonia. “It’s the gathering spot when we have parties,” Charlie says. “I think that’s because it has a very sheltering feel. You are enveloped in trees here and feel safe.”

On a recent Wednesday afternoon at Zelli Pasta in Springdale, a hard-working pasta extruder is pumping out a steady stream of casarecce into a shallow white plastic container. Mitchell Owen, who co-founded Zelli with his wife, Angelina Bowen, reaches into the container and fishes out a single piece. Rolling the ochre-colored pasta between two fingers, Mitchell notes that the texture is far different than normal grocery store pasta. “It’s extruded out through bronze dies and being cut to size, so the bronze die is what’s leaving the texture on the surface of the pasta,” Mitchell says. “See, it’s got these little ridges on it.”

Speaking to Faith Hundley and Molly Barnes, owners of Meus Floral Studio in downtown Fayetteville, one would guess they’ve been friends since childhood. However, they didn’t actually meet until working on the same freelance floral project in 2018; and in that meeting, something clicked. “That’s where Molly and I first started bonding, talking about our grandmothers’ gardens and the desire to work with our hands,” Faith says. “I remember telling someone right after I met Faith that we were going to be best friends,” Molly adds with a laugh.
