A Fayetteville couple gets their dream retreat thanks to the guidance of Harper Howey Interiors


“Simple. Timeless. Clean. And a lot of light,” are the words Kimberly Harper of Harper Howey Interiors uses to describe this Fayetteville family’s home. As a friend and former neighbor of the homeowners, Harper led the design plans from the ground up. “I’ve been involved from the very beginning stages,” Harper says. A tranquil escape in the form of a master suite was a necessity on the couple’s list. “For two years, I had been going through pictures and gathering inspiration,” the homeowner says. Harper worked closely with the owners to see this vision come to life. The result of their labor is a fresh take on traditional style that features a light, airy color palette infused with modern art, finishes, and accessories.

A calming master bedroom is a typical top-of-the-wish-list request when a family sets out to build a new home. However, creating a unique space can often pose a bit of a challenge for designers. When Katie Henry of Katie Grace Designs was called on to design a Fayetteville master bedroom, the homeowners knew she was sure to deliver something unexpected and delightful. “They wanted the room to be serene and elegant yet livable and durable for their family and young kids. Richard Harp jokes that the owners of this West Little Rock home selected him as their contractor because he was an Eagle Scout. “The lady of the house found out that I was an Eagle Scout. Much of their family have received this honor as well, and I really think that’s how we ended up working together,” laughs Harp. However the initial contractor selection was made, Harp earned merit when he and draftsman Jim Johnston were able to piece together the dream home this couple envisioned based on numerous magazine clippings, floor plans, and houses they had seen in person. “She wanted special spaces throughout the home, and the bath was one of those,” Harp notes. While working with Harp during the planning phase, the homeowner brought in designer Laurie McFarland to help achieve the look and feel she imagined for the interiors—namely the master bath.

For Carrie Kidd, a life-long passion for good design led to a later-in-life career change she didn’t expect. After college, she had plans to attend New York’s Parsons School of Design, but settled down to start a family instead. “I worked in advertising, stayed at home with my children, really just did a little bit of everything,” Kidd recalls. Meanwhile, her friendship with a Little Rock designer—who also helped decorate her Pulaski Heights home—planted the subtle seeds of a career change. “Kevin has been a dear friend for years,” Kidd says of Kevin Walsh of Bear Hill Interiors. “We are a good collaborative team. I like to push boundaries and he can reign me in when needed. I have learned a lot through just being his friend.”

Shayla Copas Interiors donated its time to the project. The firm consists of designers Shayla Copas and Marianna O’Dea. The pair worked closely with Mrs. Hutchinson to update the two rooms, both of which are located at the front of the home just off the main entrance.
