Several years ago, the owner of this home in Little Rock’s Heights neighborhood was looking for some help refreshing the recently purchased residence. Her daughter-in-law connected her with designer Susan Walsh, and thus began a yearslong collaboration culminating in an interior that feels dedicated to her favorite color combo.For the overall aesthetic, the client had a simple request. “Her only requirements were blues and whites,” Susan says. “I was curating items for her house, and she understood that it takes time and research, and she was good with that.” They started the project with a meeting at the client’s former home, determining which pieces could translate to the new space. These would become the anchor pieces Susan incorporated into the new house in an updated way.

When Heather Krijt first visited this Little Rock project, she found what was essentially a blank canvas. “The client had been playing golf with my husband and mentioned he could use some help decorating,” she recalls. Desiring to make the house feel cohesive as well as reflective of his style, the homeowner wanted Heather’s help with the entire Heights cottage—particularly the living and entertaining spaces.As they talked, Heather learned her client had an interest in art, a detail she ran with in terms of inspiration. “He asked if I could help him procure a few pieces, and this became the genesis for the entire design,” she says. “I was an art history minor so I love using art as a starting point,” she adds, noting she has developed gallery relationships all over the U.S.

A blue-and-white color palette fills a pool house in Conway with classic style
For interior designer Jill Lawrence, designing a pool house offers a chance to let loose and create a milieu that’s more relaxed and even a bit whimsical. Indeed, that was the environment her clients, a couple with three children, envisioned when they recruited her to select finishes and furnishings for their new backyard hangout.Designed by H+N Architects, the pool house’s glass-paned garage doors drench the atrium-like interior with natural daylight. The open concept allows the clients’ gatherings to spill outside, where the designer incorporated woven furnishings around the pool. “It’s a little more playful than the main house and has a staycation feel,” Jill says of the aesthetic.

In Fayetteville, Daniel Keeley creates a lush, intimate retreat designed with the homeowner’s grandchildren in mind
When this Fayetteville homeowner moved to have more room for her family and young grandchildren, she called on landscape designer Daniel Keeley to bring his talents to her new residence. The goal was to feature dogwood trees, hydrangeas, and plenty of seasonal interest while keeping her grandchildren at the heart of the design. “She grew up in the country in Arkansas, and she definitely appreciates a lush landscape,” Daniel says. “She was really trying to create a beautiful place largely for her grandchildren, where they can go out and play, and there’s a sense of exploration.”To make the most of the backyard, the designer and his client weighed their options between building a pool or adding a water feature. She chose the latter, and Daniel designed a fountain to complement the native stone used in the patio and covered seating area. “Our main goal was trying to make it look like it had always been there,” he says.

After connecting with Kirk and Kristen Smith through a past client, interior designer Meridith Ranouil began working with the couple before they broke ground on their new build in Searcy. While the plans had already been drawn, Meridith was able to consult with builder Jackie Stevens of Stevens Custom Homes to finalize layout and select materials. Together, they customized every element of the home. “I had so much fun working with Jackie,” Meridith says. “He and I really worked hand in hand. I think that contributed to this house feeling so comfortable and warm and really making sense.”

As interior designer Melissa Hall Simmons prepared to put her Fayetteville home on the market, her real estate agent called and asked to show the house to a prospective couple the next day. The couple quickly made an offer and then asked Melissa to help them redecorate, which she says was “the most wonderful opportunity ever.” Melissa designed the house herself from the ground up and called it home for nearly a decade, making her involvement in its new form that much more meaningful. “I actually drew the plans for this house when I was 25, and I fully designed every detail of it,” she says. “It was my first project. It’s what started my business. I was so excited to pass it on to this couple who loves it as much as I do.”
