Sixteen years ago, designer Jill Lawrence and her husband, Frank, moved into a charming family home in the heart of Little Rock. And, as Jill puts it, life happened. “When we first moved in we did some remodeling downstairs and painted everything, and then, you know, kids and life and everything happens and you realize you’ve been in the house for 15 years. The master bedroom needed to be redone when we moved in,” she laughs. “It’s also a good checkpoint as a designer to do your own project because you realize the stress your clients are going through—having people in your house, having everything picked out and ready to go, and the unforeseen expenses,” she adds.

In El Dorado, designer Courtney Stone transforms her home’s dated galley kitchen into a spacious, chic hub

When Courtney Smart Stone, the owner of Smart Designs, first laid eyes on the house she shares with her husband, Phillip, and their two small children, Cline, 5, and Taylor Grace, 4, she fell in love with the layout. “This house has great bones. I could see my family playing in the big great room, and I really liked how all of the bedrooms were close to one another,” she says.

However, the home’s cramped galley-style kitchen was one space that didn’t function at full capacity for the family. “My husband loves to cook, and when the two of us were in there together, we were constantly running into each other,” Courtney says. Initially, she began to remedy the situation by removing a wall between the kitchen and living room, opening up the space. But soon after, the cooktop and oven went on the fritz, leading the couple to make the jump to a full remodel.

Paige and Ryan Ray’s new construction home is a modern take on the lakeside cabin

High above the waterline in an inlet of Beaver Lake is Paige Ray’s home, a place she has christened “Escalapia.” She credits her husband, Ryan, with introducing her to the word. “Escalapia was the name of one of the hill communities that existed outside of Rogers long before the lake existed,” Paige explains. Finding that the mystical-sounding word perfectly captured the eclectic feel she wanted her home to convey, she adopted it as the name of the house, an organic, open space filled with art and vintage finds that the two share with their 4-year-old son, Sam.

Not everyone is lucky enough to start a home design project with an end result in mind. Sayward and Bryant Smith were an exception to the norm, and by the time they started working with designer Jill White, they already had numerous Pinterest boards to share. “Sayward’s a nurse, so she does a lot of dictating information all day and writing things down. Vintage-inspired details shine in this Little Rock cottage’s master bath

An admiration for marble was the starting point for designer Kathryn LeMaster when she began renovating the master bath of Cindi and Dr. Randy Maddox’s 1930s cottage. “Cindi and I both love all the marble in the Hot Springs bathhouses,” the designer notes of their inspiration. After two home remodel phases over the span of a couple of years, this space, which was in need of both style and functional updates, was the final renovation. While desiring to have an authentic “spa” feel, Kathryn wanted to honor the era of the cottage through her design by “taking material cues from other areas of the home to create a holistic feel.” Likewise, Cindi wished to incorporate elements of Hollywood Regency, “that fabulously glitzy era from the ’20s to the ’50s,” she says.

“Marble everything was, of course, a goal from the beginning,” Kathryn says. “I was thrilled that Randy and Cindi embraced marble’s uniqueness as a ‘living material’ that can require a touch more TLC than more stain-resistant materials.” After researching several types of marble, Kathryn decided on Asian Statuary tiles. The whiter base allowed the room to have a bright and airy feel, contributing to the spa-like style.

Stuart Thalheimer Davis of Cobblestone & Vine helps a young family renovate a Heights house to meet their needs and match their style


“It had really good bones, it just needed some love,” designer Stuart Thalheimer Davis says of the 1920s Heights cottage she helped homeowners Margaret and Jake King renovate. Jake puts it a little more bluntly. “It was not inhabitable,” he laughs. Luckily, both he and his wife have a passion for houses—he’s a home inspector and owner of Vantage Point Inspections while Margaret is a real estate agent with her family-owned business, The Janet Jones Company. “Since we both go into houses every day as a part of our jobs, we knew what we wanted,” Margaret says. Attracted to a location within walking distance of Margaret’s family, they set to work drawing up plans to turn the fixer-upper into their dream home.

When Lauren and Alex Blass learned they were expecting their first child, they put in a call to designer Melissa Haynes to help them plan a sweet nursery for their baby boy. However, as items began to arrive and the installation date neared, they called her back to say they were having second thoughts—not about the nursery design, but about their home. “They lived in a newlywed home in Fayetteville, and the closer it came to time for the baby to born, they felt they needed to be nearer to their offices and in a larger family home,” Melissa explains.
