Designer Shayla Copas brings the serenity of Greers Ferry Lake indoors in this classic and comfortable remodel

When Shayla Copas of Shayla Copas Interiors first started talking with the owner of this home about plans for a renovation, she soon discovered his children were the motivation for the project. “The husband spent a lot of time as a child in Heber Springs, and this was an area where he had great memories,” Shayla says. “He and his wife wanted to and a home on the lake where they could bring their kids and pass down those memories through the generations.”

Architect Burt Taggart, Jr., helps a family design and build their dream home

“This is a one-time thing, so we wanted to do it right,” Saima Majid says of the west Little Rock home she shares with her husband Majid Saleem and their three children. Influenced heavily by their extensive travel as well as their native Pakistan, the couple desired a contemporary home with efficient yet eye-catching features that could serve them for years to come. “When we thought about building our home, we knew we wanted an open, airy, and bright place where sunlight would pour through every window and where the outdoor space feels like an extension of the indoor,” she says.

Building Character

Filled with a mix of new and cherished pieces, this west Little Rock new construction home was a collaborative family affair

This wasn’t Diane Irby’s first home to build. Twenty years ago she built a home on a peaceful property in Ferndale. After selling that house and temporarily relocating to a west Little Rock residence, she began to gather inspiration to build once again. At the same time she assembled a team to help, helmed by her daughter, artist Lori DeYmaz, her son-in-law, builder and president of Graham Smith Construction, Zack DeYmaz, and designer Sha Davari of Little Rock’s Art of Design.

Yeary Lindsey Architects and Jill White Designs team up to convert cramped quarters into a stylish family abode

When the owner of this recently renovated Little Rock home approached architects Ellen and Jim Yeary of Yeary Lindsey Architects, he didn’t foresee a full-scale remodeling job in his future. “He said, Hey, I need y’all to come look at this house—I just need to do a little work to it,” Ellen recalls. “A little work” evolved into a lot of work, and eventually, the house was hardly recognizable from the disjointed duplex it once was.

A move to the Capital City prompts a couple to renovate a 1930s residence with the help of designer Tobi Fairley

Martha and Dr. Vent Murphy are no strangers to home renovations. Having raised three daughters in a 1929 home in Fort Smith, they had built an addition and done a partial renovation through the years, not to mention completed an update to their lake house—all with the help of longtime designer and friend Tobi Fairley. “Tobi and I just clicked. I have worked with her for years, and 90 percent of the time she can bring me something, and I love it immediately,” Martha says.

Contemporary architecture and comfortable furnishings blend to make both husband and wife feel at home in this west Little Rock residence

Like many young boys, Dr. Andy Henry had a lifelong dream of living in a tree house. “I started med school in Little Rock in 1979 and finished training in ’85. At some point in that time, I came out to this area and said, I want to live here someday,” he recalls. “Eventually, I found the person who owned the land, bought it, and got my friend from church, Fred Lord, to take a hike with me to see if we could build a house here. He said, ‘I can do it. It won’t be easy, but I can do it,’” Dr. Henry says.

Designer Casey Sarkin helps a longtime friend push the boundaries of her personal style in a new construction Northwest Arkansas home

For decades, the owners of this home in Northwest Arkansas had their eye on the lot where they would eventually build. However, in all that time, there was always one small problem: It was never for sale. “We’d been driving up here since we were about 29 years old,” the homeowner says. “We’ve always loved this lot, but the people who owned it didn’t want to sell it. One day, we drove by and there was a ‘for sale’ sign nailed to the tree. We bought it that day,” she says.
