Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts (arkmfa.org) in Little Rock celebrates the opening of two new exhibitions in October. “Architects of Being” (Oct. 3 – Jan. 11) pairs the works of immigrant artists Louise Nevelson and Esphyr Slobodkina. Both were considered trailblazers of their time, setting out to become artists at the start of the Great Depression with influences of cubism, surrealism, and constructivism. Works include sculptures, mixed media reliefs, collages, paintings, jewelry, and clothing on display in the Harriet and Warren Stephens Family Gallery. “Uncommon Threads in Contemporary Art” (Oct. 25 – April 29) showcases works by artists who sew or otherwise incorporate fibers into their art, highlighting the overlap between fine art and traditional craft. Explore the exhibition in the Berta and John Baird Gallery.

In Fort Smith, natural influences and refined luxury set the scene in a primary bath renovation
Gina Clark is no stranger to the world of construction and renovations. Although most of her career has been in commercial design, she loves helping friends with their residences and acted as general contractor when she and her husband, Marty, built their Fort Smith house 20 years ago. The pair didn’t have plans to remodel until Marty made an impromptu art purchase while on vacation in Malibu. “He fell in love with this abstract painting that had these bright fun colors, and I was like, This doesn’t go in our house!” Gina says with a laugh. The painting planted a seed of an idea: With their sons out of the house and two decades having passed since the home was built, maybe it was time to update. “I wanted to lighten everything up and make it a little brighter—still very livable and our vibe, but it was just time to start over,” she says.

Inspired by their love of the outdoors, a couple creates a home that’s perfectly reflective of their passions
The story of Angie and Stacey Stafford’s home is a lesson in patience. Having run across several acres of land at the edge of Ferndale a couple years after they married, they immediately fell in love with the potential it offered. They watched it sell once before going back on the market; this time, they jumped at the opportunity and purchased it. It would be 12 years before the Staffords built their dream home, an open concept country house bursting with houseplants and personality.

In Stuttgart, a full remodel yields a relaxed yet refined kitchen and bath
When Amy Terry and the team at AC Designs first walked through this Stuttgart home, it had been completely demoed. “Some things had been ordered and some plans were in progress, but the homeowner realized he needed help,” Amy recalls. Eager to continue construction and get the house back in a livable condition, she took a look at the existing plans and made tweaks that would achieve the “comfortable, functional” look her client desired.

Betsy Soos helps a family infuse their classic yet current style into a Bentonville home
After just two visits to Bentonville, Rachael and Jason Volz, along with their two sons, were hooked. “We discovered the best biking trails with art along the way, nature, museums, and an incredibly welcoming community,” Rachael says. As residents of Houston, they envisioned frequent getaways to Northwest Arkansas and were delighted to find a house near the town square that could serve as a family hangout within walking—or biking—distance of many local attractions.

Designer Chandler Bailey works with a Little Rock couple to brighten the hub of their home
When Drs. Debra and David Becton called Chandler Bailey of B. Interiors, they were looking for a whole home refresh. “They had lived here for a while, and there was a lot of brown and beige,” Chandler recalls. “Everything was still in good shape, but color-wise it was not the scheme they wanted.” While the designer helped with multiple areas throughout the house, she took a particular interest in the kitchen, which is a hangout for the Bectons as well as their children and grandchildren who all live nearby. “This is where they come for Thanksgiving and Christmas. They love having the open plan, and the island creates the perfect flow with extra seating for lots of people,” Chandler says.

As the top rice-producing state in the nation, Arkansas farmers grow almost half of all the rice in the United States. This effort goes a long way toward feeding not only America but the world. According to the University of Arkansas System’s Division of Agriculture, every seed of rice planted can produce up to 3,000 edible grains. What’s more, the remnants of locally harvested fields can provide for migratory waterfowl in winter.
