Designer Stacy Sheid Epp updates a 1970s family home with practical pieces and well-placed patterns
Attending furniture market in the sixth grade was just one of the defining moments that led Stacy Sheid Epps to a career in design. “Growing up in Mountain Home, I spent afternoons in my family’s home store, Sheid’s Furniture,” she says. “When you grow up like that, it’s in your blood—and you don’t get away from it,” she says with a laugh. “I think I probably appreciate the craftsmanship and beauty of pieces a little more than the average person.”
When the store closed in 2010, Stacy seized the opportunity to launch her own design business, and the owners of this Fort Smith home were taken with her aesthetic. “My style is traditional, and we wanted our home to be traditional but also to have a clean and welcoming feel,” says one of the owners. Having known the family for almost a decade and worked with them on their previous house, Stacy had a sense of what they wanted to achieve in this new space while keeping the soul of the home intact—especially since the owners had always admired its charm.

There is always a bit of kismet involved in finding the right house, even for those in the business of homes. Take for example Juliana and Clay Carlton, a broker and a home builder, respectively. “Since we’re both in the industry, we’re always really attune to what’s happening in the market. But just like everyone else, we had trouble finding exactly what we wanted,” Juliana says. They had, however, developed what she calls a “from-the-street crush” on a few houses in their favorite Fayetteville neighborhood. “We passed by it every day on walks, and we thought it was so cute—we had just never seen the inside,” Juliana says. She and Clay sent letters to five homes not on the market asking if the owner would be interested in selling, and as it happened, this one was.

When a neighbor was willing to sell a vacant lot they owned, the couple jumped at the opportunity and decided to build to suit their next phase of life.

Every architect has their architect story,” Adam Day says when asked what first drew his interest to the subject. “I was in ninth grade geometry class, and my teacher had us design our dream house. We had to draw it out using grid paper and build a model, and it was due the Friday before spring break. I went to him and said, ‘I’m really enjoying this, can I spend more time on it over spring break and present it when I get back?’” Upon his return to school, Adam delivered an impressive 3D model made of museum board, a profound contrast with his classmates’ popsicle stick creations.

Art of Design owner Sha Davari and her client, Nancy Miller, have a history together; the two initially met during their high school years, and the designer has now helped Nancy and her husband, Bob, with three homes. “When we decided to build, we knew we definitely wanted to use Sha. This is going to be our last home, and we wanted to get it right,” Nancy says. While Sha helped with the overall design, the kitchen and master bath were two spaces where her expertise proved invaluable. “I tend to like more tans and taupes, and Sha really went with that and made it work,” Nancy says. “She is so good at getting a vision of what you want and then making it happen.”

For Rachel Harding, a trip to the lake is about more than getting away. Having spent time growing up on Lake Ouachita at her father’s cabin—affectionately dubbed Parker Pointe, after his surname—she dreamed of having a place of her own one day. “Some of my most cherished childhood memories were coming out here,” she says. “There was no city water, so you were literally washing your hair off the back of the boat. There were no phones, no televisions here; we would just play games and be with family. It is a place I’ve always felt so connected to and happy about.”
