Family collections and thrifted finds bring meaning and style to a central Arkansas designer’s home

Jen and Ben Bienvenu were not looking to move from their downtown Little Rock residence when they found a stately property for sale in Cammack Village. The couple initially considered it too much square footage for their family of four; however, as the house sat on the market and the price continued to drop, they started to imagine the possibilities. “I love puzzles, whether that’s arranging a shelf or piecing together a floor plan, and I think this home wasn’t selling because people had a hard time seeing past that moment in time when it was last remodeled,” Jen says. “When you’re buying a house, you either get to renovate yourself or you pay for someone else’s renovation. My dad worked in construction, and Ben’s parents are an architect and interior designer. We’ve always been on the same page that if it’s got four walls, you can do anything,” she says.
The Bienvenus are typically drawn to the high ceilings and character of older homes, and this one—built in the 1950s, with a kitchen renovation and second story addition in the ’90s—is the newest they’ve lived in. So when Jacob White Construction Company came on to make updates, it was important to keep a sense of the home’s history. Starting in the main living spaces, they replaced pocket doors and walls with cased openings, which maintain separation of the rooms while improving the flow.

A doctor-turned-designer infuses her family’s home with her signature, livable style

“Growing up I wasn’t even aware interior design was a thing,” says Kricia Palmer. As a former pediatric allergist/immunologist, she first became intrigued with design while she and her husband, Jon, were both in medical school. “During my residency, we watched shows like Trading Spaces, and I realized this was something I was drawn to,” she says. “We were poor med students at the time, and I loved playing around with our house.”

Architect Adam Day creates a contemporary family home on the banks of the Arkansas River

Every architect has their architect story,” Adam Day says when asked what first drew his interest to the subject. “I was in ninth grade geometry class, and my teacher had us design our dream house. We had to draw it out using grid paper and build a model, and it was due the Friday before spring break. I went to him and said, ‘I’m really enjoying this, can I spend more time on it over spring break and present it when I get back?’” Upon his return to school, Adam delivered an impressive 3D model made of museum board, a profound contrast with his classmates’ popsicle stick creations.

Layered neutrals and bold accents bring character to a new-construction home

As they say, timing is everything. That’s why Vicki and Terry Burnett waited 12 years before breaking ground on their new home in Roland. “We had a lot of time to dream and imagine. We just wanted the timing to be right,” Vicki says. When the perfect opportunity finally did come, Vicki called on a dear friend, Mona Thompson of Providence Design, to guide the home’s interior design, and builder Bill Parkinson of Parkinson Building Group to bring the team’s vision to fruition. Mona had worked with the couple on their previous residence, which had a more traditional style than the open, transitional feel they desired for their new home. “They wanted something completely different and more casual this time,” the designer says.

Before & After: Curtis Contracting brings a couple’s kitchen dreams to life

A story in the June 2016 issue of At Home in Arkansas sparked inspiration for Becky and John Steward’s kitchen renovation. The space’s flat-front cabinetry, brick backsplash, open shelving, and appliance wall were all attractive features the couple had talked about incorporating into the hub of their Little Rock home.

Following family tradition, Rachel and Buddy Harding create a Lake Ouachita getaway perfectly suited for generations of gatherings

For Rachel Harding, a trip to the lake is about more than getting away. Having spent time growing up on Lake Ouachita at her father’s cabin—affectionately dubbed Parker Pointe, after his surname—she dreamed of having a place of her own one day. “Some of my most cherished childhood memories were coming out here,” she says. “There was no city water, so you were literally washing your hair off the back of the boat. There were no phones, no televisions here; we would just play games and be with family. It is a place I’ve always felt so connected to and happy about.”

Inspired by the view, shades of blue and white fill this recently completed waterfront home

Waterfront homes have always been popular for their ability to offer an escape, and that was never more prized than last year when travel was limited. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that as 2020 played out, the owners of this newly built Hot Springs home on Lake Hamilton were looking for a getaway close to home—and fast. To make it happen, they turned to local design professionals Debi Davis of Debi Davis Interior Design and builder Doug Rodgers of Carriage Custom Homes.

A Little Rock couple turns to B. Interiors and Richard Harp Homes to build a custom home perfectly suited to both their tastes

When Catherine Young and her husband, Dan, became engaged, one question loomed large: Where would they live? At the time, she had a home in west Little Rock while Dan was in a Heights house he had purchased almost two decades prior. After considering his fondness for his neighborhood and her desire to be within walking distance of shops and restaurants, they decided to combine their lives at Dan’s—but not in that exact house. To get the updates and square footage they wanted, they knew it would be best to start from scratch. “Dan also really wanted something that was ours,” Catherine says of the desire to build.
