chris olsen’s easy-to-make bottle stars
Just when you thought you were out of ideas for garden decor, Chris Olsen of Botanica Gardens comes to the rescue with a unique and festive way to jazz things up. Here, a fun and easy how-to for bottle stars. We love this idea for outdoor entertaining.
This is a great project for the outdoors, to dress up any patio, deck, or as a garden accessory.
You will need: assorted wine bottles, 4 rolls of paper towels (to use as braces) and clear silicone household sealer.
1. Apply sealer to bottom of one wine bottle as shown. Repeat with three more bottles.
2. Attach bottles together as shown, making sure sealer is touching all surfaces.
3. Apply sealer to another bottle in center of grouping; allow to dry.
4. For next layer, lay a roll of paper towels as a brace between bottles. Add sealer to bottom of bottle and glue as shown; repeat for three more.
There are many uses for your bottle star. You can tuck it into the branches of your trees or hang upside down from tree limbs as an outdoor chandelier.
Or as I have in this fabulous planted container.
To make this, you will need: One bottle star, 18-inch pots (ours is Terra Cotta), potting soil and assorted annuals.
1. Place star on top of container that is full of soil.
2. Plant annuals between bottles, the more plants the better! Display to show off!
dining with dylan
Inspiration is everywhere. Today, art director (and music aficionado) Mandy Keener debuts her “Cover with Style” blog series, an homage to her favorite album covers and, coincidentally, how they relate to her favorite homes and spaces. We’re loving it! And if you’re a music buff, we think you will too.
Album // Photography by Rett Peek
I have always been inspired by album covers, even as a child by my parents’ (specifically my mom’s) collection of Beatles, to Dad’s Elvis albums, to my very own record player blaring tunes from Sesame Street and Alvin and the Chimpmunks. So, it hit me one day: I love music and I love design, so why not mash them together? And here ya go. Home is where the music plays….enjoy these spaces and turn up the music.
What’s great about this one is that the home featured is a waterfront home (click here for more images) and one of the songs on this album is “wade in the water.” Coincidence or does someone else enjoy dining with Dylan as well?
seaside sketch by hannah alexander
Today we bring back amazing illustrator Hannah Alexander, author of the Sundry Mumsy blog. Last month we introduced Hannah’s guest column, Illustrating Interiors, with her lovely depiction of a garden container straight out of our May issue. Today Hannah brings us this stunning sketch worthy of the seaside, inspired by a waterfront room in our June issue.
I love the subtle touches of sea life in this month’s issue of At Homeâthe starfish and the shell printed on the pillows, the white coral used as a focal point in the fireplace (my favorite). It got me thinking about what kind of sea life I would like to incorporate into my home decor.
What I love about the sea is its mystery, its almost science-fiction quality. The term “sea-creatures” comes to mind. This is the side of the sea I find most inspiring and interesting, and everyone’s home should reflect his or her own interests. So, all that being said, I think I would most love a drawing or painting of one of the most intriguing sea creatures of all, the octopus. I can see this behind a big, ornate gold frame, making it both exotic and regal.

tulip louise: packing for a waterfront vacay
Sensational stylist Anna Chatelain of Tulip Louiseâthe brilliance behind last month’s spring cleaning closet makeoverâhas returned to bring another column of fashionable tips, this time for your waterfront travels. Kate Spade and Steve Madden are only a few of her choices for a bold look on the beach.
As of late, my days have been filled with the great task of assembling suitcases for my traveling clients. Whether you find yourself in the Bahamas, the Florida Keys or the local lake this summer, you mustn’t pass up on the opportunity to look waterfront chic. Below are my personal suggestions for withstanding the summer heat waves.

3. Scallop Stripe Swimsuit – $60. Adorable swimwear, without breaking the bank.
4. Lips in Infrared – $16. For a punch of color on an otherwise bare face.
5. Kate Spade Passport Holder – $75. Never be boring, even when going through customs.
6. Steve Madden Tobago Wedge – $90. Where comfort and style collide: the wedge!
7. Lo & Sons OG Bag – $295. Give this hard-working bag a whirl. I love mine!
8. Friendship Bracelets – $25. For the kids in all of us.

friday favorites: patios, pools and summer fun
From assistant art director Laura LaRue: “We are wanting to redo our patio, so I am taking in everything from this post. Looks so relaxingâ¦this is great inspiration!” (“Handmade Home: Creating my Dream Patio” from Decor8)
From account executive Stevi Jackson: “I had the great pleasure of owning a small Cliff May home in Dallas, TX once. It is my understanding that he did many of the houses on my block early in his career–before he headed west and became known for his classic California style. Every time summer rolls around, I long for the wonderful glass walls and courtyard of that tiny house! (“Cliff May: Classic California Ranch” from California Home + Design)
From art director Mandy Keener: “I’m so excited about this! Huge fan of both Charley Harper & Todd Oldham, and now I can add to my collection of fun dishes. From editor in chief Diane Carroll: “If you haven’t discovered Mrs. Lilien yet, it’s a must read blog– always obliges with just the right visual inspiration for every season, trip or event! Booking my summer trip to the beach, and I spy some lovely finds I’d like to pack in my bag.” (“Take Me To…” from Mrs. Lilien–Styling House)
mod meets traditional before and after
This room is calling my name this week–I’m ready to settle into the blue chair and peruse one of the books stacked nearby, some cool and quiet calm on a hot summer day. Interior designer Chris Goddard pulled together this mix of eclectically chic goods, including one of my new favorite accent pieces, Philippe Starck’s Ghost Buster commode. (Chris found this one at SR Hughes).
Interesting in seeing how other designers mix this modern classic with different styles, including a serene bedroom and a cute kid’s room? See more here. Which look catches your attention the most?
creating a pretty work space in a small space
Thanks to At Home’s editorial intern, Taylor Bowers, you can have a perfectly pretty small office update on a budget! Three cheers for affordably chic design!
Hello everyone, this is Taylor Bowers, the editorial intern with At Home in Arkansas. For my post on the At Home blog, I wanted to highlight what’s most on my mind when decorating: space, color and budget.
On a small college budget, and in a little apartment, it can be hard to decorate any room in a way that looks nice without cluttering up valuable space or breaking the bank. I’ve found that decorating sometimes is a slow process done over time, so planning purchases and designs has become important when trying to design a special room.
My next endeavor in my apartment will be a work space for me, and me only. I want a place to write and do homework without having to shuffle through my husband’s physics books and biology homework. Keeping in mind my budget, I’ve put together my ideal workspaceâit’s bright and colorful, and gives me plenty of work room as well. It also won’t take up a lot of space.

1. A simple white desk will keep me from filling up drawers and becoming disorganized. This desk from Target is a great, and affordable at $105.
2. The modern and simple look of this surprisingly comfortable Verner Panton S chair is perfect for a small space and won’t leave you sore after sitting for a few hours. It’s also only $74 from Amazon.com.
3. I love this floral rug from Urban Outfitters. It’s modern and colorful, and at $68, easily affordable.
4. Lighting is important, and this pretty lamp from Pier 1 Imports is beautiful and functional, and only $55.
5. This funky, retro clock is a great way to add some color to a white wall without making the space too distracting. It’s from retro online store ModCloth.com, for $60.
6. It’s the details that make the room, and this bright, funky wire bowl from Ikea pulls colors from the rug and clock, for $24.
7. In keeping this the retro-modern theme, this little pencil sharpener from Plasticland.com, made to look like an old camera, couldn’t be cuter at $14.
