The story of SR Hughes, a luxury showroom and interior design studio based in Tulsa, begins at home. Beth Sachse and Sallie Hughes decided to open a business they felt their mother, Sara Rodgers Hughes, would enjoy running with them—and an antiques business seemed like a no-brainer. “She had always collected antiques, had a natural talent for interior design, and loved to travel,” Beth says of her mother’s interests and inspirations. The trio named the company SR Hughes & Daughters and opened up shop in a small house in 1980.

Forty years later, SR Hughes has grown to encompass so much more—including a team of talented interior designers and a collection of world-class brands of furniture and décor. SR Hughes remains a woman-owned and family-oriented business. The company’s spacious Tulsa showroom is open to designers, clients, and walk-ins. Here, Beth spoke with At Home in Arkansas about what makes her family’s business so special.

At Home in Arkansas: How did you first become interested in art? Is this a passion you’ve always had?

Marie Weaver: I was an only child until I was 10 years old, so I became quite creative entertaining myself. I would design clothes for my Betsy McCall paper dolls and have tea parties for all my stuffed animals and dolls. Of course, I loved to draw, color, and read! For my seventh birthday, my Aunt Louise gave me a little book titled Love Is A Special Way of Feeling. It was written and illustrated by Joan Walsh Anglund and filled with wonderful drawings of round-faced children with no noses or mouths and dots for eyes. I loved them! I began writing my own little stories with characters like hers. I was forever hooked on art!

Casey Sarkin: You know all those things you’ve always wanted to do, you just don’t have the time? I realized this was the perfect time to start offering e-design. It’s actually something I already do for clients based in Little Rock, because we’re not going to drive back and forth for every meeting. So we’re using some of those practices we already use, like talking about their vision over the phone and emailing design boards for approval.

At Home in Arkansas: Tell us a little about your background. Are you native to Arkansas?

Bob Snider: I am a native Arkansan, born in Smackover. I have degrees in art and business from Ouachita Baptist University and an MBA from the U of A. Following two years as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, I was press assistant to Senator John L. McClellan in Washington, D.C., which was followed by a 30-year career as an investment banker for T.J. Raney & Sons and a managing director for Morgan Keegan. But my passion was always art. I got serious in watercolor thanks to a “Beginning Water Media” class at the Arkansas Arts Center. After some success with watercolor, I was challenged to try painting in oil, which has allowed me to paint in a bigger way.

At Home in Arkansas: Tell us a little about your background. Have you always had an interest in art?

Shelley Gentry: I have thought of myself as an artist as far back as I can remember! Starting as a young child growing up in Arkansas, my parents noticed I had enthusiasm as well as skill in art endeavors, and they looked for any opportunity to nurture my growth as an artist. I still remember the collages and drawings I completed with my summer art instructor when I was 10 years old! When I decided to attend Hendrix College, my parents were wholeheartedly supportive of my decision to pursue art as a degree.
