Autumn Containers with Better Lawns & Gardens

Fall is my favorite time of year, and it’s the perfect time to fill the containers in your outdoor living space with some seasonal color. 3 Easy Tips for Autumn Containers

1. Ensure proper drainage.

It’s important to make sure water has a way to drain from your pot so roots don’t get oversaturated. Whether you’re using a traditional container or repurposing a piece—like the washtub and vintage ice cream freezer seen above—make sure to create holes in the bottom if the container does not already have them.

2. Go bold when combining colors.

Autumn is a great time to bring in bright colors like red and orange that play off the changing leaves in the surrounding landscape. Above, vivid red geraniums and green foliage make for a popular pairing.

3. Create visual interest with varying heights and diameters.

In addition to color, size and shape are an easy way to create contrast between containers. Try grouping yours in sets of three for an easy, interesting display.

Artist Spotlight: Holly Tilley

The Art Group was founded nearly two decades ago when several Little Rock artists came together to share an art studio. In 2013, the artists officially opened a gallery, The Art Group Gallery, in Pleasant Ridge Shopping Center. Follow along as At Home in Arkansas interviews each of the group’s 17 artists to find out more about their inspirations and processes for creating.

At Home: Tell us a little about yourself. Are you native to Arkansas?

Holly Tilley: I was born in Fort Worth, Texas, but have lived and worked in Arkansas most of my life. After a long career in marketing and advertising, I finally decided to pursue my passion for art full-time. I’m a managing partner at The Art Group Gallery and a member of the Arkansas Arts Center, where a piece of mine titled “Grateful” was recently included in the 61st annual Delta Exhibition. My husband, Jim, and I have two children, Christian and Hannah.

AH: What is your primary medium?

HT: Oil paints primarily, but this year I have explored watercolor, mixed media, and abstract. I believe you’ve always got to keep reaching! I paint pieces that are fun, colorful, and sentimental.

AH: Where do you create your art? Tell us about your process. 

HT: We have a working studio in the back of the gallery where I paint almost every day. As manager, this helps me stay in touch with what’s happening with our collectors. I also like the energy when there are several of us there creating—the collaborative effect is inspiring! It’s so important in the painting process to show up and paint frequently—daily, if possible.

The process of making art for me is driven by the subject matter, and much is developed from my own photography. It starts with sketching, design development, underpainting, and then I add final layers and finishing touches.

AH: Are there any people or fellow artists who have inspired you during your career as an artist?

HT: I’ve worked with lots of fantastic artists, such as Jason Sacran, Bill Garrison, and Richard Stephens, and they all continue to push me forward. The interaction with our collectors, my art students, and fellow gallery artists energizes me and makes this job so much fun!

Providence Design’s Sixth Anniversary Party

Draped & Tailored Opens Little Rock Studio

Callie Bullock, owner of soft furnishings studio Draped & Tailored, has opened her first workroom since starting her business a year and a half ago. The 1,300-square-foot studio in midtown Little Rock has a small showroom where clients and designers can see examples in person, feel textile samples, and “discuss all of the custom possibilities,” Callie says. This new step also means she has additional space to fabricate draperies, shades, pillows, bedding, and more. “I’m now able to table panels over 20 feet long, and I’m already working at an increased level of efficiency.” In addition, Callie plans to host a series of training workshops where she can educate designers about different pleat styles, pillow and cushion inserts, and lining options, among other relevant topics. A Welcoming Retreat: Looking Back with Better Lawns and Gardens

An Arkadelphia backyard retreat created by Better Lawns & Gardens in our September 2017 issue provides relaxation and enjoyment for homeowners Terri and Taylor King. David Munsey, III of Better Lawns & Gardens lets us in on his process of renovating the space into an oasis worth sharing. 

At Home in Arkansas: How did you meet the homeowners?

David Munsey, III: Richard Harp worked with the Kings on a renovation of the interior of their home, and when it came time to talk about the backyard, he suggested the Kings meet with us.

AH: What was the jumping off point when planning the outdoor space?

DM: This is their forever home, and we wanted to help them create something that would last and that they could enjoy with their kids and grandkids for years.

AH: What is special about this space to you?

DM: Because of the panoramic view that changes with the seasons, the Kings wanted to keep the line of sight clear. So, the pavilion is essentially three rooms under one roof, which includes a kitchen, a sitting area, and a dining space.

AH: Were there certain elements the homeowners wanted to incorporate? How did you execute these requests?

DM: Mrs. King likes color, so Loren at Antique Brick Outdoors really worked with her to find cushions and fabrics that would tie everything together with the natural environment.


AH: As the homeowner, how do you view your outdoor space now?

King: This is my oasis; I really enjoy coming home at the end of the day and having a place to relax.

Before and After: Fit for a Family

In the August 2019 issue, Stuart Thalheimer Davis of Cobblestone & Vine helps a young family renovate their home in Little Rock’s Heights neighborhood.  “Overall, they wanted it to be comfortable and casual, but still have some formal aspects, which you can see in the light fixtures and accessories,” says Stuart. Four years into owning Fayetteville-based retail store WITH Home Supply, sisters Rebekah and Sarah Fess have announced they are now offering design services. The WITH brand features organic materials, a mix of modern and vintage pieces, and “products paired down to the essentials.” After years of working on side projects as the store was starting off, Rebekah and Sarah are excited for this next step. The duo will be working together on various design projects under the WITH brand. “We work well together and feed off one another creatively,” Sarah says. “We’ve had many inquiries from customers since the shop opened, so it just feels like an organic addition.” Design services include three-hour refresh sessions, small projects, and larger projects upon request.
