Our March issue is packed full of outdoor living inspiration and this outdoor renovation does not disappoint. Garry Mertins and Chris Olsen worked on this Hillcrest-area outdoor renovation. When it came to the family’s must-haves, the addition of a new fireplace and conversation space on the pool level was high on their wish list. Thanks in part to the cool color palette of the outdoor fabrics, which were selected by the owner with an eye for both function and fun, it has become a favorite space for guests. There’s so much to see in this feature, including a beautiful pool, landscaping and outdoor kitchen. It’s the perfect spot to entertain friends and family. Cheers to getting outdoors this spring! At Home in Arkansas: What are your 3 must-have items for the new year? Jennifer Huett: 1) I’m loving all the beautiful lacquered pieces now. Bungalow 5 does a extra large 3-drawer chest I bought for my storefront, but decided I had to have it. It looks great in my foyer! 2) I am so in love with Tocca right now. They have the BEST body cream (Crema Da Sogno) and scrubs that make your skin feel amazing! My favorite is Cleopatra–a soft and clean smell. 3) Also loving Kim Salmela’s upholstered pieces. She has an unbelievable sofa called the Coco. It is such a statement piece. AHIA: What is your favorite paint color at the moment? Jennifer Huett: Loving springtime since it motivates so many for a change. What better way than paint! I love Sherwin-Williams Indigo Batik and it looks lovely paired with Benjamin Moore Ballet Sippers (this soft pink is everywhere this season). AHIA: What is the last thing you purchased for a client? Jennifer Huett: A fantastic wall art called Wall Play. Inexpensive and makes such a huge statement! AHIA: Is there a design trend or product you are dying to try or purchase for a client in 2014? Jennifer Huett: I would love to use an amazing chandelier that is all feathers! Grace & Blake makes this statement piece that can be used from a transitional room to a more shabby chic look. AHIA: What is one design secret you can share with our readers? Jennifer Huett: Take RISKS! Don’t be scared to set your own trends. I know so many people who want to add color or step out of their safety zone, but are afraid to do so. Paint is a great inexpensive way to start. Begin with a small accent piece and then maybe venture out to paint a whole room.
Thanks, Jennifer!

Today, our color inspiration comes from a high-flying collection of birding field guides from a Scott collector. Jerry Butler is an avid bird-watcher and loves spending time looking out the window and exploring the grounds around his home for beloved native birds as well as foreign flyers passing through the state. “March is a particularly good time to watch for new species because of the migration that takes place as winter draws to a close,” he says of the spring season. We’ve been reminded of all the beautiful colors of different types of birds, which are beautifully illustrated throughout Jerry’s collection. Don’t forget, color inspiration can be right outside your window! Read the full story online in the March issue here or find a copy on newsstands.

Five years after the completion of the interior design work in a Northwest Arkansas home, designer Tobi Fairley returned to bring her signature bold and tailored style to the outdoor spaces. Inspired by the chic, boutique hotel pools the homeowners have visited around the world, she envisioned classic black-and-white stripes alongside more subdued elements that complement the interior of the home. “Their style—and mine—unites very clean furniture lines and tailoring with dynamic and bold uses of texture, pattern and color,” says Fairley. Let me start this month by saying how excited and honored I am to be teaming up with At Home for our Curb Appeal Makeover Contest! I can’t wait to see all the entries and help pick the lucky winner. So be sure to enter, and you could win a free makeover for the front of your own home!
Next, let me just say that thank goodness it is almost spring! After yet another bout of winter storms, I am just about to burst, as I am sure you are, too. To take my mind off the weather, I have tried to stay busy working on design projects and preparing for spring. I also tackled one more small indoor project, while the weather was too bad to enjoy being outside. Remember the deer skull I showed you last month? Well, I had to find a fun way to display it, so I turned it into a little garden-inspired craft project.
I decided I would place the deer skull to complement a mirror that hangs in the little cabana room attached to my carport. But first, something had to be done about the mirror. The color just wasn’t doing it for me, and it was a bit too small. So, I decided to cover the mirror with a variety of perserved mosses to turn it into a unique focal point
It was really easy, and I think the transformation is a big improvement. I started by using craft glue to attach a base layer of green sheet moss to the entire mirror. Since the mirror was a bit too small for the space, I allowed the moss to hang generously over both edges of the frame, giving it a slightly larger diameter.
Next I strategically attached two different types of reindeer moss, along with some lichen. I tried to create random, flowing mounds that would look as natural as possible.
I worked my way around the mirror and allowed the base layer of sheet moss to show through in places, as well. The texture of the lichen in particular is really interesting!
Once I was finished, I left the mirror horizontal for a few hours, so the glue would have plenty of time to dry, and then it was ready to hang!
Along with the deer skull, I think it adds a lot to this quirky little room, and I am so pleased with the results. Natural elements like antlers, moss, driftwood, etc. are always good candidates for accessorizing any space. So, I hope you will be inspired to bring a little of the outdoors into your next decorating project. It is an easy way to’ live outside the box’…especially when the cold weather keeps you cooped up inside…but hopefully that won’t be a problem for much longer!

Nestled in Little Rock’s Hillcrest neighborhood, this home went through an extensive landscape renovation with the help of designers Chris Olsen and Garry Mertins. As a result, they created multiple outdoor living spaces for entertaining as well as ideal areas for family fun. And–speaking of family fun–the expanded lawn area seen above is a favorite place for the couple’s children to play. These homeowners now spend the majority of their free time outdoors…and we would too! From Editor-in-Chief, Chip Jones: “I am all about crisp, all-white linens at home – but I do really love this selection from SFERRA that adds just the right amount of a light green accent color to make this bedding so inviting and fresh!” (sferra.com lists both Bear Hill Interiors and Cobblestone & Vine as their Arkansas retailers)

From Managing Editor, Tiffany Burgess Adams: “I’m swooning over this tour of Christine Dovey’s (of Bijou & Boheme) home that was shared on Style Me Pretty Living this week. It has a sort of Versailles meets Manhattan feel to me, and I love the mix of antiques and modern pieces. Dovey describes her style as ‘a blush cocktail of delicate pretty mixed with a dash of modern edge.’ I’d say that sums it up perfectly!” {“Bijou&Boheme Home Tour” on Style Me Pretty blog}

From Graphic Designer, Blythe Cate: “I’m SO ready for warm weather! This pretty dress looks like the perfect way to spring forward this weekend.” dress available from Proposals Boutique
