In Sherwood, Sha Davari helps a longtime client perfect her new-construction kitchen and bath

Art of Design owner Sha Davari and her client, Nancy Miller, have a history together; the two initially met during their high school years, and the designer has now helped Nancy and her husband, Bob, with three homes. “When we decided to build, we knew we definitely wanted to use Sha. This is going to be our last home, and we wanted to get it right,” Nancy says. While Sha helped with the overall design, the kitchen and master bath were two spaces where her expertise proved invaluable. “I tend to like more tans and taupes, and Sha really went with that and made it work,” Nancy says. “She is so good at getting a vision of what you want and then making it happen.”

Designer Sarah Smith lightens the moody hues of her home with a clean backdrop and chic finishes

With three young children, days spent on the water and nights in a calm, natural setting sounded pretty perfect to designer Sarah Smith and her husband, Cody. After selling their Fayetteville home, the family moved into a house they were originally building as an investment property on Beaver Lake near Rogers, making the dream a reality. “When COVID hit, we knew we’d be doing virtual school and thought it was the perfect time to live here and create these memories with our kids,” Sarah says.

An updated layout and polished finishes are hallmarks of this Maumelle kitchen renovation

When Debra and David Shumate built their home in 1999, a red and gold palette was all the rage. Two decades later, the couple, who are now empty nesters with soon-to-be a dozen grandchildren, have a different style and different needs. “We had reached the point where it was time to swap out colors, and that opened a can of worms with one of the biggest things being the kitchen. If we were going to stay in this house, rather than downsize, we had to modernize,” Debra says.

Kitchen & Bath Ideas helps a Little Rock couple incorporate family-friendly function (and plenty of style) into their remodel

When the owners of this Little Rock home began house hunting for their family of six, they had a very specific requirement in mind: a kitchen in need of a full renovation. “We wanted a place where we could put our own touch on it,” one of the homeowners says. She and her husband toured this 1995 property and instantly fell in love with its layout, location, and, most of all, potential.

Inspired by the homeowner’s love of pink and blue, designer Laure Antonetti Schutze creates a home brimming with pattern and personality

After spending years commuting from west Little Rock to downtown for both work and school, Elizabeth and Scott Poynter knew a move closer to the city center made sense. They began looking at homes in the Heights neighborhood and, upon walking into this house, they knew it was the one. “This house is totally different from our last one,” Elizabeth says of the 1930s abode. “I loved how the floors creaked and that the outside had this charming, inviting cottage look, but inside it had plenty of space for our family.” As the co-owner of Fayetteville’s recently opened women’s boutique, Blythe, Elizabeth loves fashion. Her eye for style carries into other areas of her life, which allowed her to envision the home’s formerly monochromatic rooms coming to life.

In Northwest Arkansas, a family home infused with current style comes to life with the help of designer Casey Sarkin

Warm, comfortable, and polished: That is how Casey Sarkin describes this family of five’s Fayetteville home. After her first meeting with the clients, the designer saw right away they had several priorities. First, they knew their new home needed to be as functional for their three kids as it would be for them. Second, they wanted every detail to reflect personality and style.

Designer Heather Krijt creates a sweet and sophisticated nursery for her daughter

When Heather and Arnoud Krijt built their five-bedroom home in Little Rock (featured in our April 2020 issue), there was one room they intentionally didn’t finish before move-in day. “We always knew this would be the nursery, and were hopeful to start a family soon after we got married and moved here,” Heather says. As the owner of HK Designs, she had several ideas in mind for the space when the couple found out they would welcome a baby girl, Charlotte, at the end of 2020.

In Little Rock, designer Jonathan Parkey creates a nursery that checks all the boxes

When longtime friend and client Meredith Causey told Jonathan Parkey, owner of J. Parkey, she wanted to convert her master closet into a sitting room, he knew something was up. A couple of weeks later, she confessed the room actually needed to become a nursery, as she and her husband, Chad, were expecting their third child. “We wanted to stay upstairs with our kids in this stage but there were no other bedrooms,” Meredith explains. The spacious closet, which is connected to the master bedroom, offered a solution. Jonathan knew he needed to get rolling on the project to meet baby boy Miller’s arrival date.

Pam and John Morton create a timeless retreat on the shores of Greers Ferry Lake

Greers Ferry Lake has always been a special place for Pam and John Morton. “John grew up in nearby Higden, and we have played on this lake together for 37 years,” Pam says. It was during their early years of marriage when they happened upon a peninsula with uncleared lots. Situated on the edge of town as well as the edge of the water, they were taken with the location. “John’s uncle was able to tell us a man from California owned the property. We tracked him down, and he said he wasn’t interested in selling; but two weeks later he called back, and the rest is history.” In 1998, the couple built what was then their primary residence on the pristine lots.

Family Escape

Following family tradition, Rachel and Buddy Harding create a Lake Ouachita getaway perfectly suited for generations of gatherings

For Rachel Harding, a trip to the lake is about more than getting away. Having spent time growing up on Lake Ouachita at her father’s cabin—affectionately dubbed Parker Pointe, after his surname—she dreamed of having a place of her own one day. “Some of my most cherished childhood memories were coming out here,” she says. “There was no city water, so you were literally washing your hair off the back of the boat. There were no phones, no televisions here; we would just play games and be with family. It is a place I’ve always felt so connected to and happy about.”
